Executive summary
Strong year thanks to innovation and promotional activity
Alcoholic drinks performed well in 2007 in comparison with the review period as a whole. 2006/2007 was a time of frequent new product innovation, in everything from beer to wine to premium whisky. Local companies and importers alike also engaged in frequent promotional activity and advertising, further adding to the dynamism of the alcoholic drinks market.
New World wine all the rage in 2007
The increasingly sophisticated Costa Rican consumers are becoming bigger consumers of wine and in particular, wine from New World countries. Chile leads the way thanks to the long history of its drinks in Costa Rica as well as the price-break given the free trade agreement with Costa Rica. Wines from Argentina were also on the rise as they offer an attractive price/quality ratio and satisfy the palate of Costa Rican wine connoisseurs.
Local players, global brands battle it out
Local players, including Florida Bebidas, FANAL and Centenario, win over consumers with their traditional alcoholic beverages. The local beer, guaro and rum have long been consumed in Costa Rica and many Costa Ricans remain loyal to such products. There is, however, increased competition from global brands as the market opens up and as consumers shift their consumption habits. Imported wine, vodka and cream-based liqueurs are just a few of the categories where global brands are gaining market share.
Supermarkets strongest and fastest growing distribution channel
As more supermarkets are opening up throughout the country, they are gaining more momentum in the sales of alcoholic beverages. Consumers are shopping less at neighbourhood convenient stores, or pulperías, and more so at supermarkets/hypermarkets as they are more convenient and offer a wider variety of alcoholic beverages.
Growth to continue in the future
Alcoholic drinks will continue to grow in the forecast period as new product innovation as well as promotional activity is not expected to slow down due to the increased competition. Imported beer, wine and whisky will all see strong growth as consumers seek more “premium” products and as consumption shifts towards these products.
