Alcoholic drinks continues to register positive growth

Alcoholic drinks market in Croatia is rather specific because it is split along the lines of where the producers are situated. For example, Osjecko Beer is mostly consumed in Slavonia (a region in eastern Croatia) because the producer, Pivovara dd, is situated in Osijek. Overall, alcoholic drinks continued to register positive volume and current value sales growth in 2008. Alcoholic drinks in Croatia continue to develop with new products, innovations, and advertising activities, especially in beer and wine.

Global trends in alcoholic drinks have little effect on the domestic industry

Global trends in alcoholic drinks did not have a significant influence on the domestic industry. The European football championship had a major impact on beer in 2008, as companies invested heavily and constantly in advertising their beer brands on television and wine in magazines. Increased consumer purchasing power drove sales of domestic and international quality wines in 2008. This was a key trend in 2008, and it was an important factor in tourism promotion in Croatia.

Domestic producers distribute international brands

The competition in alcoholic drinks is very strong in Croatia. It is very difficult for companies to reach and stay at the top, therefore players have to constantly launch new products and invest in strong marketing campaigns. The leading domestic spirits producer is Badel 1862 dd which has a long tradition in spirits, followed by other smaller domestic producers. International companies are also very strong in alcoholic drinks in Croatia. International producers often use local distributors to ensure better visibility in Croatia.

Supermarkets/hypermarkets leads distribution

Supermarkets/hypermarkets accounted for the biggest off-trade volume and value share of sales in 2008. During the review period, especially in 2007 and 2008, food/drink/tobacco specialists started to operate a significant number of stores. These stores have proved particularly popular due to their wide choice of brands. In 2007, supermarkets such as Konzum and Mercator entered internet retailing with a wide choice of alcoholic drinks. Vending machines selling alcoholic drinks remained absent in Croatia during the review period.

New categories emerge

In line with the trends in more developed alcoholic drinks markets, it is expected that new product types that either do not exist (cider) or were negligible in Croatia until recently (RTDs/High-strength premixes), will emerge during the forecast period. New bans on smoking in public places will encourage at-home entertaining and alcoholic drinks consumption in Croatia, thereby changing consumer behaviour and industry trends.
