Executive summary

Leading beer sector sees important investments

There are about 12 breweries in Serbia and two of them in Zrenjanin and Becej had no production during 2007. Substantial investments in privatised production capacities and the modernisation of production lines have been underway since 2003 when the main breweries were acquired (Apatinska pivara ad by Interbrew and Pivara Celarevo ad by Heineken) and continued during 2008. Beer continued to be the leading alcoholic drink in the country. Heineken NV entered the market by buying Pivara MB and a part of Efes Srbija, with two breweries, and is now negotiating with Jagodinska Pivara ad.

Imports remarkably exceed exports in 2007

In 2007, spirits imports were almost three times higher than spirits exports in Serbia The negative export/import ratio continued although, after privatisation, domestic players invested in spirits production in an attempt to promote exports, mainly to neighbouring countries, based upon recognisable brands from ex-Yugoslavian states.

Beer gets a new player

Beer, with its world-renowned players, represents the largest segment in alcoholic drinks. Dutch company Heineken NV announced its purchase of Pivara MB doo in December 2007. The transaction amount was not disclosed and the takeover was finalised on 19 February 2008, at which time it was also announced that the company was changing its name to Brauerei MB doo. In January 2008, Heineken NV announced the formation of a joint venture with Efes Beverage Group with shares of 72% and 28% respectively. The deal was finalised in August 2008. Efes Beverage Group has two breweries in Serbia in the cities of Pancevo and Zajecar. It has also been announced that Heineken is interested in buying Jagodinska Pivara ad.

Non-grocery retailers accounts for 20% of off-trade volume sales

Sales in the off-trade are aided by cheaper domestic brands, which boost volume sales. The leading distribution channels are supermarkets/hypermarkets and discounters, which take more than half of the total market share; convenience stores rank third.

Increasing disposable incomes boost sales

Disposable incomes significantly increased over the review period, and this allowed consumers to purchase more premium products in the off-trade or more products through the on-trade. Due this trend, both the off-trade and on-trade saw growth in alcoholic drinks sales in both value and volume terms.
