Executive summary

Sales growth of clothing and footwear rise in the review period

Sales of clothing and footwear saw accelerated growth in the review period, following the moderate growth of 2006. The year of 2007 proved to be particularly beneficial for clothing and footwear manufacturers as sales growth reached its highest levels. Worsening economic conditions in 2008 caused sales growth to slow down in 2008, but continued proving to be a positive scenario for manufacturers and retailers. Unit prices remained stable for the majority of sectors throughout the period.

Rising income levels drive consumption among the middle class

The favourable development of the Brazilian economy over the review period resulted in rising employment and income levels, particularly among the lower income levels. This drove growth in consumption of clothing and footwear, with the middle class accounting for a significant portion of this growth. Brazil has a young population whose growing interest in fashion has caused them to increasingly purchase clothing and footwear products. Rising consumer credit, particularly through store cards, also had an important role in stimulating sales.

Childrenwear seeing faster growth as children influence purchasing decisions

Clothing and footwear for children continued were two of the fastest growth sectors over the review period, driven as economic stability allowed more households to spend more money on their families. According to research by the University of São Paulo, the overall consumer market for children has been growing at twice the rate of the adult market in Brazil. In clothing and footwear industries, the increased availability of products and marketing by manufacturers and retailers has stimulated consumption, with children having a greater influence on purchasing decisions.

Market remains fragmented, but leading retail chains gaining shares

In contrast to many other countries, sales of clothing and footwear in Brazil are very fragmented, with leading retail chains only representing a limited portion of overall sales. The informal market still represents an important distribution channel as they do not pay tax and are able to sell items at significantly reduced prices. However, over the review period leading retail chains have managed to gain shares from the informal market, by investing in fast-fashion, providing more credit through store cards, and expanding their outlets into middle and lower class areas.

Economic turbulence expected to slow down sales growth

The international credit crisis is expected to slowdown sales growth of clothing and footwear over the forecast period, by negatively impacting household expenditures and even causing manufacturers to shut down factories in 2009. Sales are expected to remain stable for the first half of 2009, but see a worsening in the second half of the year. A recovery is expected further down the forecast period, but sales growth is expected to remain lower than during the review period.
