Executive summary
Economic Boom Stimulates Consumer Spending
In Singapore, 2006 was a year of great economic prospects, confirmed by a spectacular growth rate of 7.7% over prior year and the creation of a record number of jobs. Overall, this created a "feel good" sentiment among consumers, and they increasingly were inclined to make "impulse purchases." Increased consumer spending drove growth in overall retail sales and clothing and footwear enjoyed the third-largest rate of growth after telecommunications services and computers and motor vehicles.
Women's Clothing and Footwear the Main Driver of Sector Growth
Sales of women's wear were the main driver of growth in the clothing and footwear sector, constituting 53% of value sales in the entire sector in 2006. Growth in subsectors within women's clothing, in particular women's work and office attire, was better than in men's clothing subsectors.
The Internet as a New Distribution Channel
Over the review period, the internet became a viable distribution channel based on the proliferation of credit and debit cards and the introduction of new electronic payment systems such as PayPal. Overall, consumers in Singapore displayed an increasing acceptance of internet retailing. A recent survey on online shopping showed that almost one-third of Singaporeans over the age of 15 years had shopped online for clothes, accessories and footwear. As well, the survey indicated that value of their purchases had doubled, going from S$539 in 2004 to S$1,068 in 2005. A new generation has grown up with the internet, and many of these young consumers feel comfortable using it for daily chores. Many members of this consumer group are about to enter the workforce and become fully fledged consumers with acknowledged spending power. It's expected that the internet will grow significantly over the forecast period as both a distribution channel and a marketing tool.
Children's Wear Is Projected to Grow After a Period of Contraction
The children's wear subsector suffered from a prolonged period of contraction over the review period as birth rates plummeted. Over the forecast period, the subsector is projected to experience a reversal of fortune and post a healthy growth rate. Much of this growth is expected to be brought about by increasing birth rates, a situation brought about by government intervention that resulted in numerous policy changes and monetary and other intangible benefits for couples having their first (or second or third) child. These initiatives are expected to bear fruit in coming years. An increasingly affluent consumer base is also expected to increase its spending on children's wear. Growth will be driven, in part, by parents pampering their children by buying them the latest in designer wear, a trend popularized by celebrity couples in the international entertainment industry.
Growth in Clothing and Footwear to Continue at Its Current Pace
The clothing and footwear sector is projected to experience significant growth over the forecast period, at a rate similar to that seen during the review period. This growth is expected to come, in part, from the country's sustained economic growth and the resultant increase in consumer disposable incomes. Increasingly sophisticated and well-heeled consumers are expected to place a greater emphasis on looking good by wearing designer labels, and many of them will not hesitate to pay premium prices.
