Executive summary

Lack of investment curbs development of modern industry

The Slovak clothing and footwear industry is weak and lacks investment for modernisation and development. The process of privatisation and restructuring during 1990s resulted in a smaller number of companies that are strongly export-orientated. Slovakia is supplied by cheap imports from Asia and elsewhere. The footwear industry in particular is in need of modernisation. Slovakian clothing and footwear is distorted by the high rate of illegal imports. It is highly fragmented with a large number of small companies; most of them are overstaffed with low productivity.

Rising consumer purchasing power boosts sales

As the Slovak economy improves following the difficult period of economic and political reform of recent years, consumer purchasing power has also started to rise. Demographic trends are also positive in that Slovakia has a high proportion of young people who are the biggest spenders on clothing and footwear. The prosperity of the Bratislava region in particular is creating a new class of more affluent and westernised consumers who are driving demand for more expensive branded products.

Clothing and footwear is dominated by large retail chains

Both the clothing and footwear are highly fragmented and dominated by a limited number of large retail chains. The leader, Tesco, pioneered sales of modern clothing and footwear in its supermarkets and hypermarkets, and has since been followed by other multiple retailers such as the French chain Carrefour. The rest of clothing and footwear is highly fragmented with a large number of small producers and importers.

Stronger growth ahead including good export prospects

Growth in clothing and footwear stands to benefit from Slovakia’s entry into the EU in 2004. This is expected to lead to the rise in employment as new companies establish business in the Slovak Republic and domestic businesses begin to expand with the help of European investments. The decline in the European fashion market is also projected to help to turn the attention of European exporters on Slovakia. This will likely lead to a dynamic growth in the sales of both clothing and footwear, which is forecast to be underpinned by bigger investments into the production base, in particular in footwear.
