Executive summary
Overall Market Increase
The consumer electronics industry in Singapore grew by a CAGR of 9% during the 2003-2006 period. This growth was driven by an increase in consumer's willingness to spend as the job market and economy improved as well as an increase in tourist arrivals. Main expenditure items contributing to the increase were digital television sets, notebook computers and digital cameras.
Explosive Growth in Digital Television Sets
The total number of digital televisions sold overtook that of analogue televisions in 2006. In value terms, digital television sets represents over half of total in home consumer electronics expenditure since 2005. Factors contributing to this increase included the 2006 Football World Cup as well as concerted efforts by the government and industry players to promote high definition television.
New Competition
The consumer electronics market is going to get more competitive as a result of the convergence of digital products and media. Camera manufacturers are facing competition from mobile phone companies introducing high end camera functions into their products and even software companies such as Microsoft, who have introduced their Xbox 360 and Zune media player to compete in the home and portable electronics market.
Features, Fashion and Function
With the increase in competition, the industry is releasing a wider range of products to target various consumer segments. The challenge of new product development will be how to balance the amount of features being incorporated into a product while still maintaining the design factor and ease of use of the product. This is especially so in the portable electronics market where products are not only used for their functions but also as a fashion accessory.
The Digital Singapore Plan
The Singapore Government started a plan to develop Singapore into a city driven by digital technology. This was started by a push to introduce high definition television content to the mass consumer market and the introduction of a nationwide wireless broadband network in 2007. This signals a start of a digital trend and is expected to spur an increase in demand for both in home and portable digital products especially those which have wireless connectivity.
