Executive summary

Consumer electronics market set for outstanding growth

The sales performance of the consumer electronics market has been outstanding as the country' continued remarkable economic growth has led to rises in consumers' real disposable incomes. The market has developed very rapidly, as organisations have responded to the growth in the customer base. The best performance will be in the expected in the portable consumer electronics sector.

Manufacturers should prepare themselves for the expected pressures of market in which product prices have been falling and may continue to do so on account of increased competition and the establishment of low-cost producers.

Technology convergence central to growth in portable consumer electronics

The high levels of competition in all sectors of the consumer electronics market have made it imperative for manufacturers to introduce technology-based product concepts and innovations very rapidly in order to establish and defend their market shares. Technology convergence has resulted in the rapid development of new products within the portable sector, which has become the most dynamic sector of consumer electronics as manufacturers have developed portable versions of most in-home products.

Low interest rates regime to prevail

The favourable macroeconomic environment and low interest rates have provided consumers with easy and cheap access to loans and credit. Lending institutions are competing for clients and this is likely to fuel the already established pattern of consuming now and paying later. Suppliers of consumer electronics supply chain will be major beneficiaries of these circumstances, since their offerings are a top priority among consumers, and the easily obtainable financial resources will be directed towards expenditure on these goods.

Multinationals to continue market domination

The market for consumer electronics products is dominated by the established international brands of the large multinational corporations. Some local brands are making inroads into the market, however, mainly by competing on lower prices. Consumer electronics brands from Japan, Europe, America and Asia will continue to have the upper hand in the South African market for a long time to come, however, since they have the resources and capacity to establish themselves in high growth sectors, like the mobile phone sector.

Distribution to become more diversified as market penetration intensifies

The largest share of consumer electronics products (just under half of total sales, by volume) are distributed through established specialist independents, which also account for the largest share of sales of in-home consumer electronics products. The rapid development of the portable consumer electronics sector has resulted in changes in the distribution patterns, however, and established clothing retailers now offer portable consumer electronics products such as mobile phones, digital cameras and MP3 players.
