Digital-convergence trend is changing the market

Digital technology recently evolved towards combining various functionalities into a single product, creating not only dual-function, but multi-function high-technology products. Examples of these include mobile phones with high resolution cameras and terrestrial digital media broadcasting) functions, or portable multimedia players with car navigation systems.

Size and weight competition

Korean consumer electronics market has been leading the world in terms of innovation, but now they are finding it harder to come up with new evolutionary technology, which is distinct from their competitors. This resulted in competition between the slimmest and lightest televisions, mobile phones, printers and portable computers, etc.

Stagnating domestic economy, but robust market

Despite the fact that consumers felt the domestic economy was very poor in the past few years, the consumer electronics market was very active. This is because of the success of major Korean firms in the overseas market, which helped aid further research and development in consumer electronics leading to more new product developments, which Korean consumers are very sensitive to.

Prices going down and down

Although not applicable to all the products, the average unit prices in many of sectors fell steadily over the review period; notably digital televisions, portable computers and portable media players, where the market is the most vibrant and fast moving.

Mobile products are very popular

Sales of mobile devices increased, particularly in the in-car consumer electronics market. Navigation systems saw a rapid rise in sales, with large and small players entering the this subsector. Products with digital media broadcasting functions proved very popular whether on mobile phones or personal media players, as they allow people to watch TV while “on-the-go”.
