Executive summary

Rising Income Levels of the C Socioeconomic Group Stimulating Consumption

The improving macroeconomic conditions in Brazil in recent years have resulted in higher employment and income levels for the majority of Brazilians. The Brazilian government has, through its Accelerated Growth Program, fuelled this trend by creating more opportunities for the lower income groups, with the objective of raising Brazil's annual GDP growth. The rising income level of the C socioeconomic group resulted in an increased consumption of durable and non-durable goods over the review period. Retailers took advantage of low interest rates to offer attractive deals, such as payment in interest-free instalments, thus enabling more consumers to make purchases.

Debit Cards See Strong Transaction Growth in 2008

Debit cards in Brazil have in recent years established themselves as a key instrument for replacing cash for small payments, and in 2008 saw stronger growth in transaction numbers than credit and store cards. Brazilians are becoming more aware of the practicality and security of debit cards in comparison to carrying cash, and debit cards are being increasingly used for minor everyday purchases. According to research by MasterCard on consumption patterns, debit cards are most commonly used for purchases in supermarkets and petrol stations.

Companies Investing in Contactless Solutions for Small Payments

Financial cards have seen substantial growth as a payment instrument in Brazil over the last decade, providing Brazilians with increased convenience in making everyday purchases. In some areas, such as spending in retail outlets, card usage has already begun to mature. In response, companies within the industry have searched for new areas for growth in an effort to maintain high growth rates. Instruments for making small payments, such as contactless cards, have been an area of interest since 2005.

Two Years After Acquiring American Express, Bradesco Shows Strong Growth

In March 2006, Bradesco, one of the leading financial institutions in Brazil, acquired the Brazilian subsidiary of American Express, thus gaining a stronger penetration among high income individuals and in the commercial sector. These areas saw strong growth in the latter part of the review period, leading to Bradesco's credit card business showing strong growth and surpassing Itaú in terms of the number of credit cards in circulation. Strong growth for Amex Centurion cards also strengthened Bradesco's position in the charge card sector.

Financial Cards Expected to Continue to Grow, Despite Economic Turbulence

Since October 2008, the Brazilian economy has been negatively affected by the turbulence associated with the international financial crisis, which slowed down lending and consumption among Brazilians. While this slowdown was not as severe as in other parts of the world, consumption is expected to see only low growth in 2009. Despite difficult economic conditions, financial cards in Brazil are expected to continue seeing positive growth, gaining share from cheques and cash payments.
