Executive summary

Economic Improvement Boosts Financial Cards Market

Since the end of the recession in 2003 the Israeli economy has grown steadily. This growth has affected many areas, including the financial cards market. This market saw high growth rates in 2008, and is expected to continue performing well in the future. The use of financial cards is increasing annually, both in terms of the number of cards and the value of transactions. This is mainly thanks to increasing consumer confidence in using financial cards and growth in merchant acceptance.

Gift Cards Continue To Dominate Pre-paid Environment

The gift cards niche has been in constant bloom since 2004, while other types of cards are gradually disappearing. The ease-of-use of these products, along with the fact they offer a comfortable gift solution, have enabled rapid growth. Growth in related markets such as fashion brands, booksellers and home furnishing brands strongly affects the gift card niche, which is predicted to expand even more in terms of volume and value in coming years, along with new products that are about to be introduced.

Insurance Companies Offer Credit Solutions

Another new factor to enter the credit market is the insurance companies. The Overdraft Law has opened the market to increased competition and resulted in consumers seeking new sources of credit. Insurance companies were to fill the void and, having received the approval by Ministry of Finance, started offering loans and lines of credit higher than the banks could offer. This is still a relatively new player in the credit environment, but its share is predicted to grow over the forecast period.

Co-Branded Cards Expected to be Replaced by Store-Cards

Leading grocery retailers in Israel already use co-branded cards, which have proved very successful in recent years. The main target of these strong retailers is to use the infrastructure these co-branded cards create, in order to establish official members’ clubs in the form of store cards. The credit in this case will be the retailer’s responsibility, without the assistance of banks or credit card companies.
