Product coverage

Consumer lending; Financial cards and payments

Executive summary

Marketing and convenience drive growth

Financial cards saw good growth in card volume during the review period. Growth was driven by consumers’ increasing acceptance of financial cards as a convenient payment type, resulting in a shift away from traditionally more popular cash as a payment method. In addition, widening merchant acceptance, a rising number of ATMs and POS terminals and strong marketing by the leading banks boosted interest in financial cards during the review period.

Increasing debt encourages use of credit cards for smaller purchases

Many consumers have variable rate mortgages, with growing interest rates thus increasing debt towards the end of the review period. This trend was exacerbated by increasing inflation for fast-moving consumer goods. Growing debts and inflation resulted in a growing number of people using credit cards for smaller everyday transactions, boosting interest in and usage of credit cards in 2008.

Merchants switch from store cards to co-branded credit cards

Petrol companies and supermarkets/hypermarkets such as Carrefour switched from store cards to co-branded credit cards during the forecast period, working with Visa and MasterCard to offer more flexible financial cards. These enable customers to make purchases across a range of stores for different products and services, often still offering attractive discounts. Leading Spanish petrol company Repsol launched its Visa Repsol card towards the end of the review period, for example. Foreseeing strong potential for growth in fuel cards, foreign banks also entered such as MBNA, which released its MBNA Petrol Station card towards the end of the review period.

Leading banks continue to lead

Bank customers tend to be fairly loyal, with the leading banks thus accounting for the strongest share of card volume in financial cards. La Caixa d'Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona remained a clear leader, due to its strong profile and large customer base. The bank further gained share in 2007 over the previous year, with this thanks to the opening of new outlets across Spain. The other significant players in financial cards in 2007 were also leading banks, namely Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), Caja Madrid and Banco Santander Central Hispano SA.

Continued strong growth boosted by increasing security

Financial cards is expected to see continued strong growth during the forecast period. Growth will be supported by improved security for financial cards, with customers thus becoming more confident in using financial cards for purchases, both online and via store-based retailing. In addition, growth will be supported by a continuing growth in merchant acceptance. Growth will also be boosted by the economic downturn, with more consumers seeking credit as a consequence and becoming increasingly reliant on the use of credit cards for everyday expenditure.
