Executive summary
Cash is still a key means of payment
Financial cards are slowly gaining share over cash payments. However, penetration of cards is low because of Thai customs and lifestyles, which continue to strongly favour cash. Small vendors are on every street corner within the city and in rural areas. It is incredibly difficult to introduce card payments to these groups, or to expect them to accept cards, as cash is the most convenient form of payment. However, the Thai Central Bank is attempting to encourage Thai consumers to carry cards instead, as the cost of issuing cards is less than the cost of banknotes and coins. The Thai Central Bank aims to push the Thai community towards a cashless society in the long term.
ATM cards show dwindling popularity
ATM cards are widespread, but are showing flagging popularity, as consumers increasingly switch to debit cards, which offer the same functions as an ATM card but with an additional POS transaction facility. Banks are also offering debit cards, rather than ATM cards, to new account holders; ensuring a further decline in the prospects for ATM cards. At the same time, debit card holders are enjoying increasing merchant acceptance and a worldwide network.
Debit cards are the ones to watch, as they increase in significance
Commercial banks and the Thai Central Bank are focusing on encouraging consumers to use their debit cards instead of credit cards and other card types. Besides the benefits of withdrawing money and using them for card payments, debit cards are financial cards which do not apply any interest fees and are unlikely to cause a debt problem for cardholders.
Dynamism in pre-paid cards
Pre-paid cards, including Thai Smart Purse, Capital OK, True Cash Card, BTS and MRT pre-paid cards were amongst the most dynamic cards in 2008 in terms of volume growth. Young Thai consumers are becoming familiar with carrying these cards to use for small, regular transactions, including at convenience stores, paying for transportation and cinema tickets, and even paying for meals. Thus, pre-paid cards are the best solution for students and teenagers who would like to have a card, but are not yet eligible for a credit card.
Contactless features becoming mainstream
Contactless cards are receiving more attention from many financial card issuers. 2005 was the year that Thai Smart Card Co introduced contactless pre-paid cards. The company introduced cashless solutions to Thai consumers, and became the leading player in pre-paid cards. Bangkok Bank, the first bank to develop a contactless debit card, was successful during mid-2007, and the bank continued by introducing a contactless credit card in April 2008. Other players, such as Kasikorn Bank, had already launched the KBank Wave card by May the same year, and it was expected that Krung Thai Bank and Siam Commercial Bank, two of the leading credit card players, would follow this trend.
