Executive summary

Another Year of Strong Growth

Financial cards continued to post strong growth in 2008, driven by the growing usage of cards for everyday purchases and strong demand for consumer credit. While transaction growth rates were slightly slower than in 2007, due to the economic slowdown in the Czech Republic, the number of cards in circulation grew faster.

Cards Increasingly Replace Cash

The growth in the frequency of ATM withdrawals slowed down in 2008, as Czech consumers increasingly used their debit and credit cards in shops and for on-line purchases. Card personalisation, co-branding with retail chains and cashback service at POS locations were among the key factors that drove card penetration and boosted usage frequency.

Credit Cards Registers the Fastest Growth

While debit cards remained the most widely used payment card, credit cards represented the most buoyant category. Credit cards continued to post double-digit growth and it was driven by fierce competition between the banks and credit companies. Pre-paid cards began to appear in the Czech Republic in 2008 and contactless card developments are also on the way.

E-commerce Emerges as a Key Driver

Both personal and commercial credit cards posted healthy growth, increasing the average spend per transaction. The performance of personal credit cards was boosted by strong retail demand and consumer purchasing power, while commercial credit cards benefited from their growing use as a source of short-term business finance for small- and medium-sized companies (SMEs). E-commerce has emerged as the key driver, although financial cards' share of on-line payments is still low and there is plenty of room for development.

Banks Target Young People and SMEs

EMV migration of cards is well on the way and all new cards are issued with chip and PIN. This is helping to reduce fraud levels which are still growing through phishing. The competitive landscape is highly concentrated with five banks dominating financial cards in the Czech Republic. The strategies of the leading players are focused on card innovation, attracting young people and SMEs, improving customer services through the modernisation of branch networks and the continued introduction of new technologies aimed at increasing card payment security.

Advanced Card Technologies for Tomorrow's Customers

The key trends over the forecast period will include the growing use of financial cards in e-commerce, and the development of pre-paid and contactless cards and mobile payments. Pre-paid cards should find a ready consumer base among lower-income consumers whose access to credit cards is limited. Banks' strategies will focus on new technologies to increase security, increasingly sophisticated segmentation and customer-oriented services. The competition will increase as the Czech Republic becomes part of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) during the forecast period.
