Executive summary

Consumer foodservice continues its robust performance

Consumer foodservice in Indonesia continued to perform respectably in 2007, seeing slightly faster growth than in 2006. This robust performance was mainly attributable to the rapid growth in outlet numbers and the transaction volume of chained consumer foodservice outlets. Outlet number growth was fuelled by franchise agreements, further underpinned by the lower interest rate in 2007 than in 2006. Meanwhile, the number of transactions was driven by the improved economic situation in the country and the increased frequency of eating out among consumers. In addition, price increases due to a rise in basic commodity prices influenced production costs, which in turn drove up prices of consumer foodservice items.

Foodservice operators’ efforts to boost transactions are successful

In 2007, many foodservice operators – particularly chained – aimed to boost transactions by various means. Several chained brands such as Black Canyon (operated by Boga Citra Cemerlang PT), Rumah Makan Sederhana (Sederhana Citra Mandiri PT) and Texas Chicken (Cipta Selera Murni PT) expanded their outlets to major cities outside Java during 2007. Besides outlet expansion, many foodservice operators adopted a menu diversification strategy to spark consumer interest and in turn boost transactions. Several brands introduced a totally different menu to their main product offering, while other brands launched more product variants. In addition, increasing numbers of foodservice operators equipped their outlets with Wi-Fi facilities in a direct attempt to attract consumers. These efforts proved successful in boosting the transaction volumes of consumer foodservice in 2007.

Global lifestyle brands are expanding even more rapidly

2007 witnessed a rapid outlet expansion of global lifestyle foodservice brands, which are mainly targeted at upper-income consumers. This is largely driven by the opening of several lifestyle and upscale shopping malls in various cities in Indonesia, particularly Jakarta and Surabaya. Within chained cafés/bars, two prominent global brands, Starbucks (operated locally by Mitra Adiperkasa Tbk PT) and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (Trans Coffee PT) expanded rapidly in 2007, thus driving the outlet growth of cafés/bars as whole. Within fast food, a considerable outlet expansion was posted, particularly by a local brand of bakery products fast food, J.Co Donuts & Coffee. Local company, Mitra Adiperkasa Tbk PT (MAP), introduced two prominent global fast food brands, Burger King and Cold Stone Creamery, in 2007. Over 2007, the company also expanded its outlets of Pizza Marzano and Krispy Kreme, which is owned by Premiere Doughnut Indonesia PT - one of MAP’s subsidiaries.

Expansion of shopping malls drives the importance of retail locations

During 2007, an increasing number of shopping malls were built in Indonesia. Some shopping malls even styled themselves as ‘lifestyle centres’, with three quarters or more of their areas leased to consumer foodservice outlets. In 2007, these lifestyle shopping malls were extended to cities outside Jakarta, such as Surabaya and Makassar. Understandably, the retail channel continued to grow steadily in 2007 in terms of the number of units, transactions, and value sales. The retail channel showed huge potential for development as consumer foodservice outlets were increasingly situated in retail locations, where consumer traffic is heavy and passing trade is guaranteed.

Bright forecast performance will be driven by rising prices

Driven largely by transaction growth and price increases, consumer foodservice in Indonesia is expected to continue posting a robust constant value CAGR over the forecast period. Transaction growth is likely to be fuelled by the growing trend towards eating out among consumers, partly due to rising disposable incomes and higher purchasing power as well as increasingly busy lifestyles, which lead people to have less time to cook meals at home. Apart from the expected improving transaction growth, higher prices for foodservice products are likely in the forecast period, due to increasing costs of raw materials, including cooking oils and fats, flour, sugar, as well as industrial fuel.
