Executive summary

Slight slowdown in South African consumer foodservice in 2007

Economic problems, including energy shortages that led to daily shut-outs, led to a slowdown in value sales in 2007, although sales still increased by 4.6% in constant terms in 2007. South African families are increasingly felling the strain of tighter disposable incomes, leading to a tightening of belts; less eating-out was one result of this

Health and wellness influences menu updates in 2007

In line with global trends, health and wellness is becoming an increasing concern of many South Africans. Menu changes are ensuring continued appeal by offering healthier options such as side salads rather than chips, and grilled and baked items. Smoothies, salads and wraps are becoming staple presences on a large number of South African menus.

International and local brands share leading positions in consumer foodservice

While full-service restaurants (FSR), cafés/bars, 100% home delivery/takeaway and street stalls/kiosks all largely consist of local brands, the large fast food market ensures a strong international presence. Fast food sees international brand KFC leading, with local brand Steers ranked second. Fast food accounted for 35% of the total consumer foodservice value sales in 2007, and thus international fast food brands make a fairly big impact on the foodservice industry as a whole.

Retail is still proving to be the most popular location for foodservice outlets

Whilst it may have been thought that retail locations are reaching saturation point, urbanisation and the spread of development into rural areas, is ensuring strong growth. New developments in township and rural areas, such as the Maponya Mall in Soweto, have enabled a number of foodservice outlets to increase their reach. This ensures outlets of tapping into the new growth potential and expanding their brands. Forecourts are also proving popular sites for fast food outlets and convenience stores such as Nando’s, Steers and Wild Bean Café. These are areas that are both convenient and enjoy high foot traffic, therefore extending the reach of the brand.

Foodservice expected to continue good performance

Growth is set to slow due to economic problems that are currently experienced in South Africa. The weakening rand, high food and petrol prices and phenomenal inflation will drastically curb consumer spending in 2008 and perhaps beyond. Eating out may be regarded as a luxury, and thus one of the first activities to go when consumers are watching their budgets.
