Executive summary

Rising disposable incomes driving sales

In recent years Spain's economy has been boosted by low Eurozone interest rates, the construction boom, rising levels of employment and immigration, which has in turn led to a rise in wages and consumer expenditure. The latter has been fuelled by lower unemployment, high property prices and increased borrowing. All these factors have contributed to an increase in Spanish disposable incomes. As an immediate consequence, consumer expenditure on CFS has grown over the review period and this continued in 2007. However, the latest indicators show a slowdown in Spain’s economy which may result in CFS suffering a poorer performance over the forecast period.

Number of outlets increasing

The number of bars and restaurants in Spain continued to grow in 2007, with chained outlets driving sales. In 2007 the Spanish CFS company TelePizza ranked first in terms of number of outlets in Spain. The company was followed by Burger King and McDonald’s. However, in value terms it was McDonald’s that led the ranking in 2007. The three companies followed a strong expansion strategy in 2007. Furthermore, the fact that the three companies also offered new healthy references also drove sales forward.

Health trend

With the health trend still growing strongly, fast food restaurants are repositioning themselves as quality food retailers, offering healthier options as an attractive alternative to traditional fast food products. Examples of this include chains such as Delina’s, Rodilla, Bocatta and Pans & Co, which are trying to appeal to more health- and calorie-conscious consumers by offering low calorie and better for you (BFY) references.

Urbanisation shapes locations

The country is witnessing impressive development that is helping to completely transform the urban landscape. The vast majority of Spanish cities are developing further out from former boundaries. A large proportion of the population is rapidly moving out into the suburbs. This is having a major impact on retail and consumer foodservice both in terms of location and format. Out-of-town shopping centres have rapidly flourished across the country. As a consequence consumer foodservice through retail accounted for the largest number of non-standalone outlets in 2007. Retail also recorded the fastest rate of new openings in 2007.

Slightly pessimistic future

The IMF forecast, in its latest review, that Spanish growth will remain strong but moderated in 2008 with an increase in real GDP of 2.7%. This forecast is in line with the expectation that the housing market is braking rather than crashing. As a direct consequence, consumers may reduce their expenditure on leisure activities and hence CFS sales could suffer a weaker performance than over the review period. Nevertheless, current economic indicators in Spain do not paint a picture that is too bleak just yet, and moderate growth of CFS sales is expected to continue.
