Executive summary

Consumer foodservice sees outstanding performance in the context of strong economic growth

The review period as a whole was very favourable for the consumer foodservice industry but results were particularly good in 2007, in terms of value sales. The main drivers were strong demand in the context of price increases across all consumer foodservice categories. Several years of record oil prices allowed the Venezuelan economy to maintain very positive growth, thus providing most of the population with higher disposable incomes. In this optimistic environment, consumers have been eating out more frequently, while increasing their overall expenditure.

Regulatory environment pushes prices up

The scarcity of a number of foods, coupled with import restrictions, increased the production costs of most consumer foodservice categories. As a consequence, both independent and chained operations raised their prices above the rate of inflation, although the trend was more evident in chains. Quality standards at many chained outlets forced firms to look for substitutes and import essential inputs and materials in order to maintain the taste and quality expected by consumers. The higher price increases were seen during the last trimester of 2007, when consumers showed little price sensitivity. This was in part due to the bonuses delivered to employees in that period as part of their social benefits and the consumption boom generated by negative expectations about the referendum that would take place in December.

McDonald’s leads the market in an industry dominated by independents

As in previous years, McDonald’s (Alimentos Arcos Dorados CA) continued to lead the market in 2007. Nevertheless, the multinational brand saw its advantage over other players decrease during the review period. The expansion of McDonald’s has been slow while other international brands such as Subway (Subway de Venezuela CA) and Arturo’s (PAICA Arturo’s CA) enlarged their networks more aggressively between 2002 and 2007. In spite of their growth strategies, chains still represent a minority in the Venezuelan consumer foodservice landscape.

Shopping centre boom favours expansion of chains

Stand-alone outlets dominate the Venezuelan consumer foodservice industry. However, chains grew at a faster pace in 2007, with expansion partly driven by the construction of new shopping centres. Expenditure and time spent inside shopping centres increased from 2006 to 2007, favouring consumer foodservice consumption. Chains tend to be privileged when negotiating for space inside new shopping centres because of their consumer recognition and service standardisation. In this context, Venezuelans have been switching their consumption toward chained outlets.

Positive expectations for consumer foodservice sales due to favourable economic forecast

Consumer foodservice performance is forecast to be positive because current drivers are expected to persist, mainly high oil prices and populist measures that endow most of the population with higher disposable incomes. Venezuelans will eat out as much as their budget allows, as busier lives in the largest cities make it increasingly difficult to dedicate time for the preparation and eating of meals in the home. At the same time, there remains a local culture of seeking social contact outside the home. In the context of favourable economic conditions, Venezuelans will continue to increase their consumer foodservice consumption, although at a moderate pace if compared to the review period.
