Executive summary

Strong market growth between 2002 and 2007

The cosmetics and toiletries industry in the Slovak Republic grew strongly throughout the whole review period, reaching annual growth rates of between 2% and 9%. The main drivers of this trend included rising consumer purchasing power due to strong economic growth, and changing consumer habits and attitudes towards cosmetics and toiletries products. The strong entrance of hypermarkets and shopping malls bringing mass cosmetics at affordable prices, as well as highly valued global premium brands was also significant. The strongest growing ranges were depilatories, men’s grooming products and baby care in 2007.

Annual growth jumped dramatically in 2007 over the previous year

The most important change in 2007 was the dramatic jump in industry growth from a previous slower performance in 2006. This was achieved mainly due to strong economic conditions, growing consumer purchasing power as well as the expansion of mass retailing channels to smaller cities. This expanded the consumer base for many retailers that had previously been untapped.

Industry fragmented due to strong competition

Market competition is very strong, causing most retailers to focus on certain product groups. As a result, no retailer achieved an outright lead of the cosmetics and toiletries industry as a whole. None of the companies achieved a substantial share of retail value sales with the top five companies achieving less than half. The majority of the main providers grew at a similar speed as the whole market, with some of the major brands seeing a decline in share. The market was characterised by international brands, with their domestic counterparts holding a very low value share.

Distribution channels characterised by mass retailers

Mass retailers, such as supermarkets/hypermarkets and other grocery retailers held the main share in terms of distribution channel, reaching one half of all cosmetics and toiletries value sales during 2007. The industry share of mass retailers grew on an annual basis over the review period, mainly due to the continuous expansion to smaller cities. The second most important distribution channel was health and beauty retailers dominated by parapharmacies/drugstores and perfumeries. Within this channel, pharmacies increased its offering to include specialised cosmetics and toiletries. Non-store retailing also slowly gained ground, led mainly by direct selling.

Growth will continue but at a slower pace

Overall market growth will continue but at a slower pace during the forecast period. The strongest contribution to this advance will come from oral hygiene, fragrances, skin care and depilatories. The earlier economic boom period and rising purchasing power driving market evolution will gradually diminish and the expansion of mass retailers into smaller cities over the first three years of the forecast period will lead to market saturation, further slowing growth.
