Executive summary

Strong growth driven by incontinence products

Disposable paper products achieved a 2007 current value growth of 4%, exactly equal to the current value CAGR achieved across the review period. The rate of growth of disposable paper products was heavily influenced during the review period by the performance of incontinence products, which moved from being small and embryonic through retail outlets to sizeable and experiencing a consequent slowing in its rate of growth.

Branded products withstand premium private label pressure

The gloom of 2006, following the launch of premium private label products by leading supermarket chains, proved by and large unwarranted. Although increasing its current value share slightly, from 9% in 2006 to 10% in 2007, the launch of premium private label, which was supported by television advertising and which attracts prime shelf space and location, has not yet captured strong consumer support.

Disposable paper products remains a two-horse race

Two companies, Kimberly-Clark Australia Pty Ltd and SCA Hygiene Australasia, continued to dominate disposable paper products with a combined 2007 value share of 64%. Even with the added competition from premium private label, this represents a slight strengthening in the position of the two leaders compared with their combined current value share of 63% achieved in the prior year.

Personal hygiene products drives supermarkets/hypermarkets to new heights

Supermarkets/hypermarkets continued to increase its dominance of disposable paper products during 2007. Whilst growth in value share was only minimal across most categories, it was particularly strong for sanitary protection and incontinence products and was a major reason for the strong growth of these items. Also, growth of private labels is helping to drive growth of supermarket/hypermarkets in Australia.

Environmental concerns yet to translate into consumer behaviour

As was shown by the November federal election polls, the environment is of major concern amongst voters. However, products offering heightened environmental friendliness benefits have been slow to be adopted by consumers, indicating that many people still see the environmental issue as a bureaucratic problem rather than a personal responsibility.
