Executive summary
Inflation drives modest growth of disposable paper products
Disposable paper products saw modest value growth in 2008, despite the efforts of manufacturers to introduce value added products and to stimulate demand in under developed sectors such as wipes. That represents a slowdown in the growth path followed over the previous three years. However it does not mean that Chileans are not interested in quality products, but is rather a consequence of the inflation that by the end of the review period ate further into already deteriorating family budgets.
Chileans deal with tighter economy by reducing expenditure
Inflation has hurt Chileans’ disposable income, and by 2008 the effect of the global financial crisis has reduced access to credit and has started to push unemployment rates up. Emergent families have faced a negative scenario without having enough time to consolidate their recent status and most customers have been obliged to prioritize the most essential items in their shopping lists. In the case of disposable paper products, customers that belong to lower and lower-middle income segments have shifted to less expensive brands.
Innovation shifts to better quality products
Manufacturers have worked to deliver a more attractive offering that fits the growing demand for convenience and higher quality. Softness, fragrances and skin care properties appears in an ever larger range of products, such as three-ply toilet paper, scented boxed facial tissues and pocket handkerchiefs. Additionally, manufacturers have invested in improving functionality, especially in nappies/diapers and incontinence products, and adding convenience with wipes and easy to carry products. Over the last year of the review period, the introduction of Donnasept feminine hygienic wipes, Clorox’s all purpose impregnated wipes and Poise light incontinence products have ignited the competition in these categories and invited customers to change their consumption habits.
New players in retailing, including WalMart
The retail sector was one of the most dynamic in Chile over the last decade, and 2008 was no exception. Late 2007, Saieh Group and Southern Cross astonished the market with their race to buy as many regional supermarket chains as available: a race that by the end of the year had created the largest supermarket chain (SMU) and left few independent chains operating in the country. Leading retailers, Cencosud, Distribución y Servicios D&S and Falabella, have continued expanding nationwide to avoid losing ground in regions outside Santiago and in emerging neighbourhoods. At the same time, D&S reinforced its strategy to develop its Ekono chain (discounter store) the first in the country, and revealed the deal of the year: the sale of a controlling stake in the company to WalMart.
Competition and innovation should drive robust growth
Although the economic downturn has delayed some investments it is expected that over the forecast period an ever larger number of customers will start to buy more disposable paper products, and/or shift to value-added products. Cash rich and time poor customers should generate opportunities for growth and innovation, which should fuel robust market growth, even in more mature sectors, and growth rates should exceed those observed over the review period. CMPC Tissue, Kimberly-Clark and Procter & Gamble are likely to fight for every point of the market.
