Disposable Paper Products Exhibits Healthy Growth

Living standards for Chinese consumers improved dramatically over the review period, thanks to the continued rapid development and further opening-up of the Chinese economy. Heightened disposable incomes, demographic changes and growing demand for better quality boosted overall disposable paper products sales in 2006. This led to dynamic growth for nappies/diapers/pants, incontinence products, tissues and wipes. A promising tourism industry also boosted disposable paper products in the away-from-home channel, which contributed to higher demand for toilet paper, tissues, wipes and paper tableware products.

High-grade Disposable Paper Products Popular in Urban Areas

Due to a diversified consumer profile and income level disparity, China exhibits great differences in consumption levels between different regions. Consumers in large cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou are able to afford premium products due to their relatively higher living standards and consumption patterns. Underpinned by an increasing number of middle- to upper-class consumers in first-tier cities, the consumption of high-grade disposable paper products tends to be popular due to the widespread pursuit of higher-quality lifestyles. In addition to this, growing consumer sophistication in large cities has also led to more frequent new product launches and shorter product lifecycles.

Nappies/diapers/pants Leads Growth While Sanitary Protection Slows Down

Nappies/diapers/pants clocked the highest value growth in 2006, albeit within a baby-boom year. However, sanitary protection products witnessed a slower growth rate than the previous year due to demand saturation. Within this, sanitary towels were preferred to tampons and pantyliners and are considered to be the most acceptable format of sanitary production for modern working Chinese females. This consumer group tends to be educated, earning relatively higher incomes and having better product awareness, and thus is more willing to use these convenient and essential products in order to keep clean.

Strategic Alliance Between Guangdong Vinda Paper and SCA Hygiene Products

Guangdong Vinda Paper Co Ltd sold part of its stock to SCA Hygiene Products, a Swedish paper company, in early 2007. As a prominent national player, Guangdong Vinda Paper Co Ltd may benefit from SCA Hygiene Products’ advanced management experience as well as capital funds to further expand its business scope across the country. Meanwhile, SCA Hygiene Products could also share Guangdong Vinda Paper Co Ltd’s national distribution network to increase its sales, particularly in the away-from-home channel. It is reported that SCA Hygiene Products has launched the Tork brand, tailored for away-from-home, aiming to supply a range of public environments in the country including restaurants, hospitals, hotels, offices and industrial premises with products including toilet paper, napkins, wipes and paper towels.

Brighter Future Driven by Increasing Birth Rate and Ageing Population

Sales of disposable paper products are expected to grow at a fairly healthy rate over the forecast period.

However, with the slower growth of core products such as sanitary protection, future growth engines will be nappies/diapers/pants and incontinence products, which are supported by the demographic realities of the increasing birth rate and the ageing population. With the growing number of elderly people as well as more institutional facilities, such as elderly care homes, both retail and business sales of daily necessities such as toilet paper, tissues, kitchen towels and household wipes are also expected to grow steadily in the forecast period.
