Disposable paper products maintained its fast growth in the economic downturn

Since late 2008, the credit crunch has been pulling down the global economy. The Chinese economy has also been experiencing a hard time, with people’s disposable incomes decreasing. However, the financial recession did not have a significant influence on the disposable paper products market in 2008. People’s growing hygiene consciousness backed up the fast growth of disposable paper products. Certain product categories like sanitary protection or toilet paper already enjoy high penetration levels and are seen as daily necessities that could not be abandoned, even in a financial recession. Other areas like nappies and wipes that are still not developed in China continue to move ahead strongly thanks to ongoing urbanisation and rising product penetration.

Demographics boosting sales

Demographic changes are highly relevant to disposable paper products market development. The ageing of the population is generating high growth rates for incontinence products as the older generation is the main consumer group for incontinence products. In addition, the 2008 Olympic Games made this year a baby boom year. With a high baby birth rate, nappies/diapers/pants was strongly stimulated and recorded the strongest growth within the overall disposable paper products market.

Consolidation continuing with fast expansion by domestic manufacturers

Due to multiple product choices and an enjoyable shopping environment, the supermarkets/hypermarkets channel is still the dominant sales channel for disposable paper products. The expansion of supermarket/hypermarket outlets into low-tier cities even increased its share of sales. In addition, the specialists for women and children are showing an increasing importance in the Chinese market. Both in first-tier cities and the underdeveloped regions, more consumers are choosing certain disposable paper products like nappies and baby wipes in specialists, where there is more product variety. Some of the specialists also offer entertainment areas for babies or children, so that people can enjoy some family time there. Thus, the specialists were becoming more attractive in 2008.

China’s disposable paper products market is still regarded as having great untapped potential for the forecast period. Categories, including tissues, nappies, wipes etc, still have low penetration in the Chinese market, especially in underdeveloped cities and rural areas.
