Executive summary

Declining population growth impacting various sectors

Since 1998, Costa Rica saw a year-on-year decline in population growth. This decrease in population growth has impacted various sectors of the disposable paper products market, particularly nappies/diapers/pants. With fewer births in Costa Rica, there is less need for diapers. The leading diaper company, Kimberly-Clark, needs fresh ideas to drive consumption up to counteract the trend of declining population growth.

Consumers remain traditional in their consumption habits

Costa Rican consumers are traditional in their tastes and preferences. This holds true in several disposable paper sectors in Costa Rica, and it is often difficult for companies to change the habits of Costa Ricans. Creativity and innovation on behalf of manufacturers is the key in order to push sales and given more reasons for consumers to shift from one product or brand to another.

Price and value-added products drive purchase decision

Many Costa Ricans are driven purely by price when it comes to various disposable paper products. The price needs to be accessible so consumers feel as if they are getting a good deal. Consumers increasingly seek value-added and innovative products that offer a point of differentiation in the minds of consumers. Although many consumers do not want to pay more for most products, they increasingly see the benefits of value-added products.

Strong tourism market impacts disposable paper products market

Costa Rica is a tourist destination of choice for people from all over the world. The country boasts pristine beaches, lush rainforests, active volcanoes, and a tourist-friendly atmosphere. Tourists, totalling over 1.5 million per year, have a large impact on the consumption of various consumer markets, including AFH products. As tourists stay in hotels and dine in restaurants, they contribute to the consumption of a wide array of AFH products including toilet paper and napkins, among others. The tourism market has an enormous impact on virtually all consumer markets and AFH products are no exception, as much consumption occurs in hotels and restaurants.

More women in the workforce, seeking more convenient options

Local Costa Ricans increasingly consume AFH products as a result of lifestyle changes. More women in Costa Rica are entering the workforce and thus have less time to cook and eat at home. For reasons of time and convenience, Costa Ricans are eating out more, in both fast-food and full-service restaurants. Therefore, Costa Ricans increasingly contribute to the consumption of AFH products in restaurants, such as napkins, tablecloths, and toilet paper. This trend of more working women is expected to grow in the forecast period and beyond as education levels for women increase as well as the need for two household incomes.
