Market performance strong in terms of both volume and value sales

Croatia’s disposable paper products market recorded positive growth in volume and value terms throughout the review period. Despite the fact those demographic indicators like decreased birth rates and an ageing society are not favourable to growth; sales are increasing on a constant basis. Consumption per capita is relatively high compared to the region, but there is still space for further growth.

Global trends followed in Croatia

Global trends are evident in the Croatian disposable paper products market. The health and wellness trend is affecting tissues and cotton wool/buds/pads, while the increased convenience trend is visible in sanitary protection and nappies/diapers/pants. The main players in the market strengthened their shares through promotional efforts.

Regional manufacturers playing an important role

As in most FMCG markets, the multinationals are significantly present in the disposable paper products market too. However, manufacturers from the region, both Croatia and neighbouring countries, such as Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, are also holding their own. Most of them are still locally owned, but may become attractive prospects for acquisition by larger companies. The same manufacturers often appear as producers of private label products, which are present in this market more than in any other, with a significant growth trend.

Retail distribution split between supermarkets/hypermarkets and H&W stores

The overwhelming majority of disposable paper products in Croatia are distributed through two channels: supermarkets/hypermarkets and health & wellness retailers. The former is represented by large chained retailers, like Konzum, Mercator, Billa and Getro, while the latter is represented by chained H&W retailers, like Drogerie-Markt and Kozmo (local chain owned by Agrokor dd). These channels still have space for growth and will be strengthening their positions over the forecast period.

Performance over the forecast period slower, but constant

Sales in value and volume will continue to increase on an on-going basis, although not on the same level as during the review period. The Away-From-Home market will have stronger growth figures as the number of on-trade outlets is increasing and the distribution sector is getting more organised. It seems that in some segments the per capita consumption has reached significant levels, and decreasing birth rates combined with a progressively ageing population exert some influence on consumption patterns.
