Executive summary
Sustained, Steady Growth Over the Review Period
Increased segmentation in categories such as sanitary protection and nappies/diapers/pants contributed to steady growth in 2008. From pre-teen sanitary protection to adult incontinence products, manufacturers continued to segment in order to cater to the specific needs of consumer niches.
Increased Coverage of Rural Areas
In 2008, rural areas were more aggressively covered by manufacturers, as they realised the importance of disposable income in the provinces. Fuelled by remittances received from abroad, families in rural areas began to modify their purchasing habits and thus demanded higher quality branded products.
Kimberly-Clark Corp Remains Most Successful Company
Papeles Absorbentes SA (Kimberly-Clark) again proved in 2008 why it was the foremost manufacturer of disposable paper products in Guatemala. Leading in almost every category in which it participated, the company enjoyed excellent brand recognition and consumer preference across high-, mid- and low-income consumers. Some of its brands, such as Kotex and Kleenex, have become generic names for any type of sanitary protection products or tissues in Guatemala.
Grocery Retailers Cover Entire Country
Distribution through grocery retailers, such as supermarkets/hypermarkets and independent small grocers, accounted for almost all disposable paper products' sales in 2008. Wal-Mart continued to expand its presence in urban and rural areas. It did this through various retailing formats, such as Paiz (supermarket), Hiperpaiz (hypermarket), and despensa familiar (low pricing retailer).
Positive Performance Expected
Disposable paper products is expected to continue to perform successfully over the forecast period. With one of the region's highest birth rates, Guatemalans will continue to purchase staple products, such as nappies/diapers/pants and toilet paper. They will also be exposed to products that are predicted to impact the mainstream consumer base, such as adult incontinence products. Disposable paper products in Guatemala has not currently reached its full potential in many categories, such as personal wipes and paper tableware.
