Executive summary
Consumers increasingly adopt disposable paper products
The disposable paper products market posted double-digit growth in 2008. Growth was mainly driven by sanitary protection and incontinence products, which continue to form the bulk of the sales of disposable paper products in India. Mass media advertising as well as below-the-line consumer outreach activities are the key growth drivers alongside rising concerns about health and hygiene as well as growing purchasing power among women. However, the regular use of tissue-based products remained limited to the affluent urban households.
Pack size and price modulation remains key
With penetration of disposable paper products remaining low compared to other countries in Asia, companies focussed on expanding the consumer base for their products. Pack sizes containing only 2-10 units remained key in generating trials in sanitary towels, diapers, incontinence products, wipes and pocket handkerchiefs. In addition, price discounts on wipes and tissues increasingly encouraged impulse purchases in supermarkets. Nonetheless, with supermarkets allowing companies to reach out directly to affluent and expatriate consumers, large pack sizes consisting of 10 or more rolls of toilet paper started making an appearance in 2007 and 2008.
Competition intensifies
Although several categories in disposable paper products in India continue to be heavily dominated by one or two leading players, in 2007 and 2008 regional players and new multinational players increasingly sought a share of the market. 2008 saw the entry of players such as industrial fibres manufacturer Grasim Industries Ltd into disposable paper products, while existing disposable paper products players such as Kimberly-Clark Lever, Tainwala Personal Care Products and Pudumjee Hygiene increasingly expanded their presence across all products.
Supermarkets allow new/niche brands to thrive
While well-established brands such as Whisper and Huggies continued to expand their consumer base through heavy investment in rural distribution and mass media advertising, new brands such as Kara and Prim by Grasim Industries and niche brands such as She Comfort by Royal Hygiene leveraged the expanding network of retail chains to increase their visibility and generate brand awareness and trials. Regional and emerging players in tissue products especially benefited from their presence on supermarket shelves as low differentiation among tissue-based products brands allowed consumers to pick products based on attributes such as packaging design and pack size as well as price discounts.
Robust growth expected
The disposable paper products market is expected to post strong growth in the forecast period, buoyed by rising disposable incomes and growing exposure to the use of disposable paper products. The expansion in the AFH channel, driven by a buoyant IT sector and expanding hospitality and foodservice sectors, is expected to further acclimatise urban Indians with the regular use of tissue-based products. The current low per capita expenditure on disposable paper products in India ranks among one of the lowest in the region, paving the way for faster growth in the forecast period. The changing retail landscape is also expected to boost the sales of this emerging industry in India.
