Executive summary

Local recycled paper manufacturer leads market

Disposable paper products in Kenya, especially the toilet paper, tissues, kitchen towels and paper tableware sectors is led by one giant paper manufacturer, Chandaria Industries Ltd. This Kenyan company is the oldest manufacturer of disposable paper products and it held the leading value share of retail disposable paper products in 2005.

Manufacturers target key distributors

Supermarkets/hypermarkets was the key distribution channel for sales of retail disposable paper products over the review period. In Kenya the key distributors targeted by local manufacturers are the Uchumi supermarket chain, the Nakumatt Holdings Group, and a new entrant in chained supermarkets/hypermarkets, Tusker Mattress Limited. Other important distribution channels are others, independent food stores, convenience stores and chemists/drugstores, which also provided major retail outlets for disposable paper products.

Horeca and business/industry provided the main distribution channels for away-from-home- (AFH) products over the review period. Although hospitals/healthcare and public improved their value share of sales slightly between 2000 and 2005.

Quality versus price

The main competing factors in disposable paper products over the review period were product quality and consistency of supply against the cost factor. The main consumer trend in Kenya is product affordability, especially at the retail level.

On the other hand, institutional consumers such as hotels and restaurants favour attractiveness and quality of product to the mere availability of different products, as cost is a factor for horeca and other AFH too. This explains why Kimberly-Clark Corp has continued to maintain a high value share of sales to 4- and 5-star hotels, despite the constant stock-outs of their products, mainly because of the long importation process. The hotels tend to favour Kimberly-Clark’s products because of their renowned wet strength favoured by international clients.

Hygiene legislation widens access to sanitary protection products

The Kenyan parliament in 2004 approved an act that removed duty on all imported sanitary protection products. Its argument was that with the growth in the youth population, schoolgirls were experiencing difficulties during their menstruation cycles as a result of the expensive nature of these items leading to reduce attendance at school. Unhygienic use of clothes for protection during the menstruation cycle was also cited and this resulted in a significant price reduction of sanitary protection products, which made these products more affordable.
