Executive summary

Increasing household incomes help DPP to experience strong growth

Lithuanian disposable paper products surprisingly showed double digit growth in 2007. The main reason for the fast growth was increased consumer income. Greater spending power created greater demand for quality and luxury products in the largest categories of DPP. Deeper penetration of some product groups was also an important reason for growth. Toilet paper, kitchen towels and tissues showed fastest growth in disposable paper products in Lithuania. Increased horeca attendance positively influenced AFH products.

Quality becoming an important issue

Lithuanian disposable paper products experienced rapid increased demand for quality and luxury products. Increased household incomes permitted consumers to pay for added value on their products. In disposable paper products, consumers were willing to pay for added strength, absorbency, thickness (3-ply or even 4-ply), softness, scents and patterns. In particular categories, consumers increasingly demanded convenience – thinness (sanitary protection), sensitiveness (baby care), modern innovations (cleaning solutions). This trend is expected to strengthen over the early forecast period.

Multinational and local company share the leading position in DPP

The leading disposable paper product producers retained the same in 2007. Multinational, The Procter & Gamble Co, and local, Grigiskes AB, were the two largest companies in terms of retail value share. A sharp rise in demand for toilet paper and kitchen towels helped local company Grigiskes to reach this level. SCA Group continued to steadily lose retail value share, but remained one of the top companies. Increased variety in premium products helped private label to show stable positive growth over the review period years.

Small changes in distribution channels

Lithuanian disposable paper products experienced a slight change in 2007 in terms of the structure of its distribution channels. The popularity of supermarkets/hypermarkets helped this channel to remain the most popular disposable paper products’ distributor. Independent small grocers continued to lose share to supermarkets/hypermarkets and convenience stores. Chemists/drugstores retained reasonable share. However, the forecast period looks brightest for supermarkets/hypermarkets that continues with the expansion of stores throughout the whole country.

Disposable paper products to grow strongly

Even possible Lithuanian economy problems will not stop disposable paper products from strong growth during the forecast period. This growth is expected to continue across all categories, without exception. Strongest growth will come from toiler paper, tissues and kitchen towels. The first two will offer increased quality as consumers with increasing household incomes create demand for luxury products. The slow positive birth rate will lead nappies/diapers/pants to easy growth.
