Executive summary

Working women lead strong growth in disposable paper products

Disposable paper products posted better growth in both retail current value and volume sales in 2007. More innovations were launched by players, such as premium ranges or products with attractive packaging, which attracted and retained consumer interest. Disposable paper products in Malaysia is still mainly targeted at women and sales enjoyed stronger growth due to the increasing purchasing power of women, as more Malaysian women are working.

Premium and sophisticated products the focus of new launches in 2007

With disposable paper products becoming more established and the purchasing power of consumers improving, manufacturers ventured into more innovative products targeted at specific consumer groups. New launches in 2007 were dominated by premium and sophisticated products, such as Royal Gold Twin Zone boxed facial tissues and Kotex Soft & Smooth ultra-thin towels. The premium aspect of these launches was mainly conveyed through higher quality materials and, to a smaller extent, products being positioned as suitable for a certain lifestyle, typically an active lifestyle.

Multinational Kimberly-Clark remain unshakeable at the top

Multinational Kimberly-Clark remained the leading player in Malaysian disposable paper products in 2007. The company’s presence is wide, with well-known brands across disposable paper products. This wide product portfolio allowed it to maintain top position throughout the review period. Besides being leader in retail disposable paper products, Kimberly-Clark is also very active in away-from-home disposable paper products, where it is one of the leading players. However, competition was very fierce in 2007, with third-ranked local company Nibong Tebal Paper Mill Sdn Bhd notably posing a stronger challenge. Consequently, Kimberly-Clark saw a gradual decline in value share in 2007.

Supermarkets/hypermarkets remains dominant channel

Disposable paper products are for the most part seen as modern products in Malaysia, which are increasingly substituted for reusable counterparts. Consequently, the products have always had a strong presence in modern retail outlets compared to more traditional outlets. For disposable paper products, sales through supermarkets/hypermarkets dominated in 2007 and this channel’s value share kept climbing throughout the review period. This was thanks to not only competitive pricing but also due to the promising development of private label in these modern retailers. These attracted all consumers but especially lower-income groups attracted by competitive pricing.

Better growth expected for disposable paper products in forecast period

Disposable paper products is expected to continue to grow healthily over the forecast period, with an improved constant value CAGR in comparison to that seen during the review period. The most important factor driving the growth will be a continued shift towards disposable paper products from reusable alternatives. This will be boosted by a wider range of pricing points being offered, as players seek to cater to different consumer groups. Constant value sales are expected to grow only moderately, however, as players try not to increase prices due to intense competition. Volume is expected to grow more strongly as consumers’ awareness of personal hygiene is expected to increase over the forecast period. This applies especially to the Malay ethnic group, which forms the majority of the Malaysian population.
