Executive summary
The economic recession slows the penetration of disposable paper products
The current economic crisis is starting to have an adverse effect on the growth rates of disposable paper products in Mexico. In 2008, retail value sales of disposable paper products grew at a much slower rate than the review period CAGR. The high cost of energy (oil, electricity, and natural gas) and raw materials, mainly cellulose, and the slow performance of the GDP and the overall economy are impacting sales negatively. Important economic measurements such as the significant decrease in the consumer confidence index and the rise in inflation to its highest level in seven years by the end of 2008 suggest that economic conditions will remain difficult in the short-to-medium term. Industry sources refuse to make detailed predictions on the performance of the industry for the forecast period, yet most of them agree on difficult times ahead.
Chinese imports of toilet paper suffer a setback in 2008
Toilet paper imports from China registered exponential growth up to 2007, accounting for a low single-digit share of national apparent consumption. However, in 2008 the performance of Chinese product suffered an important setback, as overall toilet paper imports fell by almost one third and Chinese imports experienced a decrease in its share of national apparent consumption. Nonetheless, while domestic production covers almost all of national apparent consumption, the risk of economy products arriving in the country will increase as people look for cheaper alternatives.
Medium-sized manufacturers engage in multi-brand strategies
While Kimberly-Clark de México SA de CV, the dominant company in disposable paper products, has mastered the multi-brand strategy, smaller companies are offering several brands to cater to the different income segments of the population. Mabe, Productos Internacionales SA de CV for example, manages six different brands of nappies/diapers, the same number of brands as Kimberly-Clark. Fábrica de Papel San Francisco SA de CV, a much smaller company than Kimberly-Clark, owns up to seven brands of both toilet paper and napkins. Other notable examples include Lambi SA de CV, which manages five brands of nappies/diapers and Artículos Higiénicos SA de CV, which offers three brands in the growing incontinence products category, compared to only one brand by Kimberly-Clark. Medium-sized companies are increasingly well aware of the wider advantages of targeting different segments of the population.
Large grocery retailers continue to dominate distribution
As large grocery retailers have achieved coverage in most large cities in the country and are expanding their operations into medium- and small-sized urban areas, their importance as a distribution force increases. Wal-Mart, the largest and most influential retailer in the country, plans to keep expanding during 2009 despite the difficult economy conditions, while retailers such as OXXO, Soriana and Chedrahui will follow in its footsteps. As the influence and distribution shares of large grocery retailers grow, more traditional channels (popular markets, parapharmacies/drugstores) will continue to register weaker distribution shares in disposable paper products.
Incontinence products witnesses growing segmentation
Incontinence products continued to register very strong retail volume sales growth over the review period, fuelled mostly by powerful demographic developments that point strongly to an ageing population. In 2008, incontinence products also enjoyed greater exposure in retail stores, partly overcoming the social taboo of “nappies for adults”. These factors encouraged manufacturers to develop more sophisticated product segmentation strategies. Manufacturers of incontinence products increasingly offer a wide variety of products, some of which were non-existent in the mid-review period. The range includes: night-time protection items, light, moderate and heavy incontinence products, bedcovers, underwear, stretch products, and products segmented by gender and size and by premium and standard prices. Strong sales growth and greater segmentation is also fuelling the launch of wipes designed for adults. Until recently, baby wipes were used by adult consumers. Finally, the increasing participation of large grocery retailers (Wal-Mart and Soriana) in incontinence products has added dynamism to the category.
