Executive summary

Discounts and promotions drive faster volume growth

Volume growth of disposable paper products was generally faster and stronger than value growth in 2008. This was, in part, due to the economic slowdown during late 2008 that drove consumers to seize the opportunities presented by promotions to purchase disposable paper products in bulk. Manufacturers also sought to increase their competitiveness in disposable paper products by bundling their products either as free gifts or extra volume packs, thus driving volume growth. Additionally, manufacturers featured their products at discounted prices on a regular basis to remain competitive.

Consumers seek out both high and low quality disposable paper products

Consumers in Singapore willingly traded quality for cheaper disposable paper products in order to save on household expenses, due to a restricted budget resulting from the economic slowdown in the country. This was largely applicable to products such as kitchen towels, as consumers perceived little difference across brands. However, they also showed interest in high quality disposable paper products despite being price-sensitive, and favoured low cost products for more personalised products, such as toilet paper and nappies/diapers/pants. This indicated that consumers tended to prefer higher quality disposable paper products that were for personal usage; meanwhile opting for lower quality disposable paper products for general purposes.

Kimberly-Clark (S) Pte Ltd continues to lead

There was increasing presence and popularity of domestic manufacturers in disposable paper products in Singapore in 2008, such as Tipex Trading Pte Ltd in tissues and toilet paper and Disposable Soft Goods (S) Pte Ltd in nappies/diapers/pants. Despite this, international manufacturers, such as Kimberly-Clark and Procter & Gamble (S) Pte Ltd continued to lead sales. Kimberly-Clark continued in the lead with its strong presence across various disposable paper products, including sanitary protection, nappies/diapers/pants, incontinence products, wipes, toilet paper, tissues, kitchen towels and paper tableware. This allowed the company’s brands, Kleenex, Huggies and Scott, to become familiar among consumers in Singapore, thus establishing Kimberly-Clark as a household name.

Supermarkets/hypermarkets remains the preferred retail channel

Supermarkets/hypermarkets in Singapore continued as the preferred retail channel for the purchase of disposable paper products. Retailers owning a range of private label disposable paper products made these available at the respective retail outlets. As a result, they were able to feature their products on promotions on a regular basis, such as including extra volume or free gifts. This attracted consumers, as it provided them with bargains, enabling them to purchase bulk disposable paper products. Despite supermarkets/hypermarkets being the preferred retail channel, health and beauty retailers increased in prominence for retail disposable paper products. Consumers found it convenient to make purchases of personal products at this type of distribution channel.

Consumers increasingly interested in recycled disposable paper products

Consumers in Singapore are expected to increase their interest in recycled disposable paper products over the forecast period. This will be due to their increasing awareness in environmental friendliness, and they are expected to demand disposable paper products made from recycled paper. It is also expected that consumers will purchase disposable paper products that bear the recyclable logo and are of lower quality. This will allow them to cut back on their expenses as well as allow them to practise environmental friendliness. In addition, the economic slowdown in late 2008 is expected to drive consumers to opt for low cost disposable paper products that are recycled and are of low quality. It is, therefore, anticipated that consumers will gradually shift towards disposable paper products made from recycled paper over the forecast period.
