Executive summary

Stronger purchasing power drives volume and value growth

Disposable paper products in Singapore performed better in 2006 than 2005, mainly due to improved purchasing power of consumers. The improved economy in Singapore has led to consumers becoming more affluent. Coupled with more women entering the workforce, this means that households and females can spend more on quality or value-added products.

Mid-priced brands take centre stage

Although consumers are becoming more affluent, they remain price sensitive towards staple disposable paper products such as cotton wool/buds/pads, tissues and kitchen towels, given that they perceive little differences among product offerings for these sectors. As such, consumers are increasingly picking up mid-priced brands that offer comparable quality to premium products but at a lower price. The fact that mid-priced brands have a better brand image than private label is also important, as consumers look for brand reputation when deciding on value for money.

Working women seek convenience and better quality

As more women enter the workforce, they increasingly seek a better quality of lifestyle and are less willing to spend time on household chores. This has benefited volume and value growth of convenient disposable paper products such as household care wipes. In addition, as women enjoy higher disposable incomes, they are also willing to spend more on better-quality products such as ultra-thin towels with wings and cosmetic wipes, which can facilitate their daily lifestyles.

Private label introduces more personal products

With the rapid expansion of supermarkets/hypermarkets in Singapore, retailers have expanded their product range across various sectors. During 2006, retailers introduced a variety of products in the more personal disposable products sectors such as incontinence products and nappies/diapers/pants. However, as consumers are more particular about the quality of personal products, private label is not expected to perform as well in these sectors as in staple disposable paper products such as cotton wool/buds/pads or tissues.

Busier lifestyles, higher disposable incomes and ageing population will drive volume and value growth over the forecast period

The convenience of disposable paper products such as wipes will assist volume and value growth of disposable paper products over the forecast period, as consumers lead lifestyles that are more hectic. Higher disposable income of consumers will also lead to growing demand for value-added products, and thus higher value growth, as these products are usually more expensive. In addition, the ageing population in Singapore will further push up volume and value growth of incontinence products over the forecast period.
