Executive summary

Return to growth for disposable paper products market in 2005

South Korea’s disposable paper products market saw an upturn in 2005, demonstrating growth in current value terms compared with the decline seen in 2004. With a rapidly ageing society incontinence products saw strong growth, and overall sales were also boosted by the rising number of women in the workforce. The latter factor led to a greater number of dual-income households, and increased demand for products with added value features.

Declining birth rate impacts baby products

The continued decline in the birth rate in South Korea had a negative impact on the performance of products such as nappies, which saw a continued decline in current value terms in 2005. Manufacturers aimed to stimulate growth by improving the quality of their existing offerings, and added value by launching products with improved features. For example, March 2005 saw Daehan Pulp Co Ltd launch Bosomi Soft Wide – a wider, thicker product designed to facilitate better absorption.

Formaldehyde content impacts sales of Huggies

Sales of baby wipes saw a sudden decline in current value terms in 2005 following several years of strong growth. This was due to reports of excessive formaldehyde content in Yuhan Kimberly’s mainstay baby wipes brand Huggies. Formaldehyde is a carcinogenic agent, prolonged exposure to which should be avoided. Manufacturer shares changed markedly as tests revealed that wipes brands from other companies, such as Procter & Gamble and Johnson & Johnson, did not contain formaldehyde.

Increased demand for sanitary protection products

The sanitary protection environment saw continued healthy growth of ultra-thin towels with wings and tampons. Pantyliners in particular were boosted in 2005 by a growing number of women wearing these products on an everyday basis, as they seek freshness and confidence throughout the day. Sales were also stimulated by the introduction of functional products, such as scented pantyliners. Cotton-covered, more flexible or body-fitted pantyliners also proved popular.

Toilet paper sees increased investment

Large toilet paper manufacturers are aiming to stimulate value sales by offering innovative, high quality products with added functionality. More new products are being introduced with added fragrance and colour, for example. 3-layer toilet paper products are also becoming available. An increase in the popularity of these higher value offerings is likely to lead to increased polarisation in toilet paper, with more affluent consumers buying the higher priced brands, and their less affluent counterparts sticking to private label products.

Growth expected to slow over forecast period

The South Korean Government plans to re-impose VAT on sanitary protection products from 2007, which could have an impact on sales. Furthermore, economic conditions in the country are demonstrating signs of slowdown, and property prices are rising. If this situation continues more affluent consumers could be forced to trade down to mid-priced products, while their less well-off counterparts reduce expenditure even further. This would be a situation to which manufacturers would be forced to react in this competitive environment, for example through sheet-count reductions in products such as toilet and kitchen rolls.
