Unit prices increase in disposable paper products
The major manufacturers of disposable paper products increased unit prices in 2008 mainly due to higher international raw material costs, including pulp, and a weak South Korean won. In late 2008, global oil and other raw material prices stabilized, but the weak local currency made it hard to reduce prices as most of the products are made of imported pulp. Manufacturers will focus more on sales promotion such as buy-one-get-one-free and bulk packaging to offer competitive deals.
Non-store retailing grows
Supermarkets/hypermarkets dominates the retail distribution of disposable paper products in South Korea, although non-store retailing (internet retailing or homeshopping) is increasingly popular as it provides consumers with convenience and competitive prices. Furthermore, increased international oil prices made consumers more inclined to reduce car usage for shopping. Instead of driving to a supermarket/hypermarket, more consumers chose non-store retailers which are offering various free delivery services.
Demographic trends affect key categories
The growing number of senior citizens and decreasing birth rate is moving South Korea towards being an ‘aged society’. In South Korea, the ageing population affected sales of incontinence products, especially AFH incontinence products, positively, as more elderly people moved into healthcare facilities. On the other hand, the declining birth rate affected nappies/diapers/pants negatively. Manufacturers are expected to focus on more premium products to increase their value shares and satisfy parents who demand high-quality products for their children.
Preference for premium quality health-related products
While most consumers in South Korea are having a difficult time due to the economic recession, the consumers’ preference for premium products increased in particular health-related categories such as sanitary protection and nappies/diapers/pants. As these products come into direct contact with the body for significant periods of time, consumers are demanding better quality products with improved softness, absorbency, designs and other added value aspects.
