Executive summary
Another growth year
For the second year in a row, sales grew in a spectacular way in Venezuela. After the economic crisis of 2003, the biggest sectors like sanitary protection or toilet paper fuelled the behaviour of the whole market. The reason for this growth was an income increase for the families in the social sectors C, D and E due to an expansion in public expenditure. According to official figures from Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas (National Statistics office), about 80% of the population belongs to the segments C, D and E.
Venezuelan consumers take care of their skin with natural products
The developing of new products in disposable paper products has as a common factor the skin care issue. In this sense, there is a trend towards preferring natural ingredients such as aloe vera and chamomile. The skin’s rubbing against the paper product generates this need, and in a greater way among the more delicate segments of the population, such as children and the elderly, or in delicate areas of skin contact with the paper.
The market is split among a few companies
The disposable paper products market in Venezuela is concentrated among a few companies: the first four control 82% of market value, while the first six account for almost 95% of total sales. Local representation dropped nine percentage points over the 2001-2005 period. Meanwhile, multinational companies earned nearly seven percentage points in terms of share during the same period. Behind these numbers, a greater interest from the multinational companies in the penetration in new product areas was evident, while is notorious a conservatory position from local companies, caused by the political environment and reduced financial capabilities.
Young people are more willing to innovate, but the family looks for savings
The packaging is usually adjusted to a family’s needs and budget. In 2005, Venezuelan families averaged 4.5 people per home. Although budgets are adjusted to the needs of the whole family, government aid, with employment plans for young people, has expanded income sources.
The youth segment appreciates technology and innovations, in spite of the price, in areas like nappies/diapers/pants, pocket handkerchiefs and sanitary protection. In these cases, comfort is a quality that is directly related to technology. When shopping, other factors are also involved, like aspirational ones, more natural products or the brand’s image.
New competitors with lower costs could enter the market
The possible arrival of the state-owned company Invepal SA, taking advantage of the government discount channel Mercal SA, could seriously affect the incumbent market of disposable paper products in areas with low levels of added value. Meanwhile, in sectors where aspirational purchases are important and that require significant investments in technology such as sanitary protection or diapers, it is less likely that the Invepal SA arrival will succeed. At present, its production encompasses only office paper and workbooks.
In the future, the entry of Venezuela into the group of countries that make up the Mercado Comun del Sur (MERCOSUR) and the announced departure from the Comunidad Andina de Naciones (CAN) could change the industry structure of the disposable paper products market.
