Executive summary

Significant slowdown in DPP growth

Although lower than in 2007, the DPP market still recorded positive growth in most areas in Venezuela in 2008. Although current value growth in 2008 was roughly in-line with the review period average, constant value growth was significantly lower. The decline in growth in 2008 can be attributed to product scarcity and the impact of strong inflation on the Venezuelan economy.

Increasing market regulation and strong inflation impacts growth

Product scarcity occurred within a number of DPP areas during 2008, with product availability on retail shelves sometimes falling short of high demand. Increasing market regulation was partly responsible for this problem, with controls for imports of raw material and final products, due to strict exchange rate controls, slowing down operations within the retail and manufacturing segments. In addition, declining consumer purchasing power due to strong inflation and a contracting economy also inhibited growth during 2008.

Procter & Gamble leads sales in 2008

Multinational Procter & Gamble de Venezuela CA remained the leading player within the DPP market during 2008. However, the company’s retail value share declined slightly in 2008 due to increasing competition. Domestic producer Papeles Venezolanos CA followed close behind P&G, making inroads in the economy segments of several popular sectors. This shift in competitive environment reflects the overall economic environment in Venezuela, where an increasing number of consumers are shifting towards more affordable products.

Supermarkets/hypermarkets increase in popularity

Supermarkets/hypermarkets continued to dominate DPP sales during 2008, increasing their value share to almost 50% of total sales at the expense of small grocery retailers and non-grocery retailers. Over the review period, supermarkets/hypermarkets increased their presence throughout Venezuela as consumers increasingly valued convenience and the ability to purchase all of their households needs in one location. On the other hand, forecourt retailers recorded the largest decline in value sales because of government regulations with regard to petrol distributers.

Modest growth expected within DPP market over forecast period

All DPP sectors are expected to grow in volume and constant value terms over the forecast period, albeit at a more modest rate than that which was experienced during the review period. No large constant value price increases are expected due to the fact that the market will contract as a result of the economic downturn. However, further market segmentation and the introduction of new innovative products will help to fuel sales during the forecast years. Manufacturers will put particular focus on satisfying the demands of the older adult population which will continue to grow rapidly over the coming years.
