Executive summary

Domestic appliance growth slows

The global economic slowdown has begun to have an impact on the Australian domestic appliance market, as a result of a deterioration of the Australian housing market, itself the result of a series of interest rate increases designed to reign in inflation. The erosion of both the housing market and the renovations market has meant that most of this decline has occurred in large appliances whose purchase is typically tied these activities, with the refrigeration appliance segment especially affected.

Vacuum cleaner sales boosted by bagless products

This negative impact on domestic appliance sales has not been universal, however, with many categories actually demonstrating strong growth rates in 2008, as Australians become more house proud, a trend that is largely due to consumers staying home more to conserve their finances. The most notable of these is vacuum cleaners, whose rise can not only be attributed to this growing house pride, but to the efforts of vacuum cleaner manufacturers, most notably Dyson, in adding value and creating excitement in the category. A dramatic shift in the market from bagged models to the more convenient bagless format, has also demonstrated itself as a powerful driver of consumer interest.

Prices to jump over 2008/2009

Increases in input costs ranging from steel to oil, and from transportation to labour costs, worked together to provide upwards cost pressure during 2008. Manufacturers have done their best to keep prices stable, assisted by a high and appreciating Australian dollar and the fear of the ramifications of being the first brand to raise its prices. There will be rises in the price of domestic appliances, however, over 2009, coming as a shock to consumers who only experienced falling prices over the review period and throughout the 2000s.

Refrigerator sales cooling but still king

Although growth in refrigeration appliances declined in 2008, they are still the largest category, due to the tendency of Australians to only go grocery shopping once a week, and therefore requiring a big space in which to store their food. Refrigeration appliances have also become a status symbol within Australia’s middle class, with side-by-side fridge freezers becoming standard within more affluent households.

Housewares International Ltd has designs for market domination

Marketers of Breville models, the dominant brand in small kitchen appliances and distributor of Philips irons and personal care products, Housewares International Ltd continues to dominate its categories, due to its focus on design and providing solutions to consumer needs. In large appliances, however, Electrolux leads the market, through its brands Westinghouse, Dishlex, Electrolux, Kelvinator, Chef and Simpson, thereby covering a wide range of price points and catering to every demographic of Australian.
