Executive summary

Unbalanced growth

2006 saw strong demand for large kitchen appliances result in an increase in volume sales, driven by greater product development, financial incentives and tough price competition. Value sales also experienced strong growth due to the switch of customers to higher priced and quality items. On the other hand, the performance of the small electrical appliances environment in 2006 was marginal. Small kitchen appliances experienced a strong loss in volume terms due to a lack of innovation, while personal care products and air treatment units experienced strong growth.

Domestic electrical appliances benefit from lifestyle changes

Increasingly busy lifestyles has created demand for more convenient food products in recent years, such as ready meals, chilled and frozen foods. This is expected to have a long-term influence on growth in areas such as fridge freezers, freezers and microwaves, as people both need more space to store frozen and chilled foods, and also convenient cooking devices such as microwave ovens. Changes in lifestyles have also created demand for time-savings appliances. This mainly impacts items such as launder appliances, irons, cooking, washing, and any which offer significant time-saving properties, as long as energy, environmental, and cost factors are positive. As a result, this should accelerate the replacement of older appliances in coming years.

Increase demand for energy saving appliances

A key trend over the review period was the increasing penetration of units that consume less energy and more efficient large kitchen appliances. These items are more expensive, which impacts positively on value growth. This trend was driven by regional financial incentives and the industry initiative, ‘Time to Go!’, which teaches consumers how the simple act of replacing old appliances with new, more energy-efficient, models contributes to climate protection.

Personal care leads small electrical appliances

Belgians are becoming increasingly aware of fashion, style and personal care, and are paying much more attention to personal appearance. This has benefited products such as oral hygiene and other personal care appliances. As a result manufacturers have introduced a range of new products and innovations. As a result sales of personal care appliances lead all sectors for growth and will continue to do so as the media continues to strongly influence fashion trends.

BSH boosted sales

2006 was a very positive year for Bosch-Siemens, which experienced a considerable rise in share, becoming the market leader in value sales. This leadership can be explained by a very aggressive pricing policy, and the traditional high perceived quality of the German manufacturer’s products. This pricing strategy is due to the reduction of production costs due to the relocation of some production units in Eastern Europe.
