Executive summary
Increased access to credit boosts sales
In a competitive retail environment, department stores are offering more and more credit to consumers and are paring down requirements to increase their consumer base, which is increasing the purchasing power of low-income consumers. With payments over a period lasting anywhere from 12 to 36 months, people were able to purchase more large ticket items and upgrade to premium brands in 2006.
Construction boom fuels new appliance purchases
High copper prices are fuelling economic growth in Chile and the knock-on effect is a boom in new construction due to low interest rates according to the Chilean Construction Chamber (Cámara Chilena de la Construcción). The growth in new homes contributed to growth in new appliances, especially refrigerators and large cooking appliances, which are necessities for new homes.
Private label continues to grow
Another way retailers are boosting profits is through selling their own private label product ranges. While they are still mainly limited to small appliances, retailers were able to increase their share of total domestic electrical appliances by two percentage points in 2006 at the expense of traditional Chilean manufacturers such as CTI Cía Tecno Industrial SA and Sindelen SA, because of their lower prices. Since more consumers trust private label products to provide the same quality and features as branded equivalents but at a lower price, being second only to CTI Cía Tecno Industrial SA in 2006, private label will continue to grow. Falabella’s Recco, Ripley’s Starlight and Almacenes Paris’ Nex are the private label product ranges of the biggest department stores in the country.
Free trade agreements impact domestic electrical appliances
Several free trade agreements were signed and others are in negotiation between Chile and various countries. Some Korean manufacturers, such as LG, Samsung and Daewoo, increased their investment in the country in 2004 and 2005; other Asian countries are expected to do the same in the years to come. Meanwhile, the free trade agreement with China, which was activated in 2006, is leading to strong competition in some small appliances such as microwaves, blenders, mixers, and personal care appliances as low-cost imports flood the market.
Strong peso favours imports
In addition to the welcoming environment created by the free trade agreements, imported products enjoyed price advantages due to a strong peso. The strong peso encouraged people to purchase both economy and premium imports across all appliances.
