Executive summary

Overall domestic electrical appliances market continues to be restrained

Overall volume sales of domestic electrical appliances decreased somewhat in 2006, due to restraints on demand for certain products, such as small cooking appliances and small kitchen appliances. The replacement rates of domestic appliances have held steady or declined slightly, with no particular economic stimulus to encourage consumers to trade up. Some products did see growth, particularly freestanding units, but the still low sales of such products did not result in a positive performance for domestic electrical appliances as a whole.

Refrigeration appliances decline in 2006

Sales of refrigeration appliances declined in both volume and value in 2006. Unlike other white goods, which in some years have been favourably affected by Japan’s system kitchen boom, refrigerators, which in Japan are largely freestanding, lacked this stimulus to carry gains in 2005 on into 2006. However, this may be just a temporary pause, as even in homes with system kitchens, Japanese preferences tend towards freestanding refrigerators. Increased technical and design innovation, along with the expansion of the single household market, should provide a platform for growth in coming years. With technical advantages, such as lower energy consumption, as a sales point, and falling prices, as more Japanese refrigeration production moves off-shore, product cycles appear to be ready to shorten. At the same time, Japanese manufacturers have been making advances in increasing interior volume while not increasing outer measurements, setting the stage for demand for a new generation of refrigerators.

Automatic washer dryers to see continued demand due to convenience

Over the forecast period, home laundry appliances are expected to enjoy growth due to increasing demand for automatic washing machines, particularly washer dryers. The reason for the popularity of washer dryers is increased convenience. Hanging the wash outside is considered time consuming. Because of the humid climate, Japanese consumers constantly need to check the weather forecast before they can do the wash. The washer dryer relieves this problem. Some machines are now also touting their ability to get rid of bacteria and bad smells. In the coming years, many companies will outsource more and more production capacity to low wage countries. Of note here is the move by both Sanyo and Sharp to start collaboration with Haier. This Chinese manufacturer will supply Sharp with washers, as well as a broad range of white goods, including washers, to Sanyo.

Gloomy future

Volume sales of domestic electrical appliances are expected to continue to fall gradually over the forecast period, while value sales will see a slight increase. As Japanese consumers spend less time at home and in the kitchen, they will look for value-added domestic electrical appliances which offer convenience and speed, as well as efficacy. At the same time, the convenience of dining out translates to less cooking at home, reducing the need for many small electrical appliances. The aim of maintaining health and wellness, which typically entails preparing more healthy food at home, will encourage certain health conscious consumers to demand appliances for meal preparation; however, more consumers will still prefer to dine out due to busy work schedules.
