Executive summary

Eco and energy-saving products gain popularity

Due to the further realisation of global warming consumers are increasingly keen on environmentally friendly home appliances, as this represents one of the easiest ways that an individual household can contribute to reducing the problem. With energy labelling becoming more established, manufacturers also advertised their energy saving products strongly in 2007. One example was the Hitachi washer-dryer BDV2000N, which uses only 2,200 watts of power – around half the energy consumed by the 2002 model.

Air conditioners become the hottest heating appliance

Rising crude oil prices and increasing attention to CO2 emissions have resulted in consumers becoming hesitant to use oil heaters in Japan. Instead, air conditioners have become more popular as heating appliances. The qualities of such appliances are increasingly innovative, such as self cleaning, air purifying with negative ions, changing temperature according to people’s movement and humidifying functions. Matsushita’s CS-X series and Mitsubishi’s MSZ series are examples of ranges featuring such functions.

Late summer impacts sales in 2007

In 2007, the real hot summer came late, after a long rainy season in June and July. This resulted in a slow start to sales of air conditioners and refrigerators, although the late but very hot summer weather seen in August and September led to increased sales of such appliances, but not as high as in 2006. Meanwhile, long rainy seasons led to good sales of washer dryers as consumers were unable to dry their laundry outdoors.

Changes to Housing Construction Law a blow to built-in appliances

In August 2007 an amendment to the Housing Construction Law was implemented, setting in place much tighter rules on construction or reform of a property due to the repeated scandals regarding falsification of housing qualities. As a result it now takes longer to get permission to begin a construction or even begin a redevelopment. This amendment hit the decrease in new housing construction and reforming in the second half of 2007, and resulted in many property owners postponing redevelopments or constructing new housing. As a result, this adversely impacted demand for built-in home appliances.

Gentle growth predicted for forecast period

Overall, the domestic electrical appliances market in Japan is expected to see a mild increase over the forecast period, with volume and value CAGRs of 1-2%. More expensive appliances with value added functions will continue to attract consumers, and contribute to growth. Some examples of such products are luxurious rice cookers which have various functions and inner pots made of copper or other precious metals, as well as front-loading washer-dryers, which complete a wash/dry cycle in just two hours.
