Executive summary
Enthusiasm towards eco-friendly and energy-saving features
Japanese consumers became increasingly keen on environmental issues in 2008. The Toyako Summit held in Hokkaido in July 2008 helped boost consumer awareness of such issues thanks to media exposure and manufacturers’ promotions. Under these circumstances, choosing eco-friendly and energy-saving home appliances has become standard practise among Japanese consumers. Retailers are also becoming more involved, encouraging customers to choose such products by offering discounts or points accumulation. Such interaction of all players provides a greater chance of growth of eco-friendly and energy-saving home appliances in Japan in coming years.
Demand for cleaner air at home boosts air treatment products
“Buying clean air” has been penetrating in Japan, where the high standard of cleanliness is favoured. As they learn more that virus and bacteria activation depends on the humidity of the air, consumers are more enthusiastic to keep clean and comfortable air in the room using air purifiers, humidifiers and dehumidifiers. Manufacturers have launched various products to meet such demand, trying to come out with the difference from such functions featured in air conditioners. For example, fortify the laundry dry function in the dehumidifiers, which is welcomed by the consumers especially during the rainy season in summer.
Premium models gain popularity
Premium models in various domestic electrical appliances saw good sales in 2008. Such products are popular for their high value-added functions, greater better energy-saving attributes and eco-friendly properties with regard to large kitchen appliances such as laundry machines and fridge-freezers. As manufacturers compete to offer value-added functions, consumer choice of premium models is widening. Consumers are also finding more luxurious and functional improvements in the upper-price segments of smaller products such personal care appliances and small cooking appliances.
Built-in hobs and cooker hoods ride on expansion of all-electric housing
The electric companies and manufacturers have aimed to promote all-electric housing and enjoyed success over the review period. As all-electric housing uses only electricity as a heat source, built-in and freestanding gas hobs have been rapidly replaced by induction hobs. An increasing number of consumers find the clean and safe induction hobs attractive in their kitchen, and manufacturers are developing induction hobs with better functionality. Cooker hoods are also often renewed when changing hobs, and these two appliances consequently saw rapid growth in 2008.
Mild growth expected for forecast period
Overall the domestic electrical appliances market is expected to see a slight increase over the forecast period. Premium models with high value-added functions and improved eco-friendly and energy-saving features will attract an increasing number of consumers. Expensive appliances such as front-loading washer-dryers, fridge-freezers with a capacity of over 500 litres, and rice cookers with luxurious functions remained niche products in 2008, but are expected to gain share over the forecast period.
