Executive summary

Housing construction boom continues

The housing construction boom in Mexico continued in 2006, with new president Felipe Calderón continuing the previous president’s emergency housing plan. As a result, an estimated 700,000 new homes were built in 2006, with the trend expected to continue throughout the forecast period. The bevy of housing construction activity, mostly for low-income consumers, has important implications for the domestic electrical appliances industry that will impact essential appliances for new homes such as refrigerators, laundry appliances and microwaves.

More production in Mexico

Mexico continued to be an important destination for manufacturers hoping to increase their margins and become more competitive. In 2006, Electrolux, Whirlpool and LG made important investments in manufacturing capacity in various regions of Mexico. If this movement is successful in improving distribution and making manufacturing more efficient, it may be able to lower prices and increase volume sales for large kitchen appliances in the forecast period.

Sales growth still has strong limiting factors

Although new product innovation remains strong and the latest technology finds its way into Mexican retailers, premium items found little room for growth in Mexico. With many products like electric can openers continuing to be considered unnecessary, slow growth in consumer income, and many upper class kitchens being run primarily by maids, the majority of Mexican consumers remained unwilling to pay extra for expensive features or expensive but unnecessary items.

Trendy products do well

Domestic appliances that meshed well with Mexican consumer habits did well in 2006 and are expected to continue to grow in the forecast period. Food preparation appliances that are affordable and well adapted to the Mexican kitchen, such as food processors, mixers and blenders (especially popular hand-held units) that can make preparing traditional foods such as Mexican salsas easier did especially well during the review period. Other items, such as hair care appliances, also performed well with an increasing number of women tending to use items like hair curlers and straighteners in the home.

Heat wave sweeping in air treatment products

Record hot weather convinced even more Mexican consumers that air conditioners is not a luxury but a necessity in 2006, thus it saw strong growth since 2003. Falling prices resulting from the influx of Asian imports bolstered the trend, and warming conditions, low penetration and slowly rising incomes should combine to keep growth solid through the forecast period.
