Executive summary

Comfort at home, a priority for Portuguese consumers

Although the economy slowed down in 2008 and consumers’ morale was at its lowest due to the fact that purchasing power was low, the domestic electrical appliances market contradicted the tendency and developed positively, because in 2008 the priority of Portuguese consumers was to have additional comfort at home.

Beautiful kitchens in which to receive guests and higher demand for design and colours

Portuguese kitchens are becoming a central space at home. Open plan kitchens are becoming the heart of the home, and increasingly substitute the lounge as the place where guests are received. Consumers, more conscious of the aesthetics of their kitchen, are willing to make extra investments in it and appliances for it. This explains the higher demand for stainless steel, colours and design, but also, built-in appliances or particular devices, such as side-by-side appliances.

Green appliances, an accelerator of replacement cycles in mature markets

Consumers were more conscientious about the environment’s problems and the need to reduce the consumption of electricity and water. Large kitchen appliances, as large consumers of energy, benefited from this heightened awareness. Demand for devices classified as “A” in terms of energy efficiency is expected to continue to grow over the forecast period, stimulated by the energy efficient national plan that tries to persuade consumers to replace old devices with new, environmentally-friendly ones. This measure should accelerate the replacement of old appliances that have almost 100% household penetration, such as fridges, fridge freezers and washing machines.

Added-value pushes sales of small electrical appliances

The small electrical appliances sector performed quite well during 2008, driven by some key products, such as food processors, irons with water tanks, bagless vacuum cleaners, coffee pod machines, citrus pressers and personal care appliances. The best-selling products show that effectiveness and ease of use are basic features that are key for consumers when making purchase decisions, because these features save time on housework. Two other strong motivating factors are related to the image presented to others by owning a certain appliance, and the appearance and size of the appliance in the home.

Small domestic electrical appliance brands face an uncertain future

Electrical goods retailers multiples was the leading distribution channel for small electrical appliances. A wide range of products, brands and models are sold in these outlets. Some of them are expected to reduce the number of brands in the short term which will have an impact on the position of the actual manufacturers. With this measure, some brands could disappear from the Portuguese market while others could see their shares grow.
