Executive summary

Dynamic growth resumes in 2006

Domestic electrical appliances ranked among the most dynamic retail product areas in 2006. Sales were driven by stronger purchasing power and fierce price competition between the leading chains, which led to a decline in average unit prices in 2006. Sales picked up in 2006 following a two-year period of weaker growth, driven by growing demand for technically advanced, energy-efficient, branded appliances. Consumers are taking advantage of regular price promotions and seasonal sales to buy more expensive models.

Positive economic and socio-demographic trends

Domestic electrical appliances is benefiting from strong economic growth and positive socio-economic trends, in particular the rising number of single-person households and women in full-time work. Demand is also being boosted by the growing use of consumer credit, which is helping sales of built-in appliances and premium products. The growing trend in favour of open plan kitchen/living rooms is also boosting demand for attractive and technically advanced appliances.

Built-in appliances post faster growth

Particularly strong growth was seen in built-in fridge freezers, large capacity washing machines and built-in hobs and ovens. Microwaves also continued to benefit from strong demand. Food processors, mixers and coffee machines led the growth in small electrical appliances. Sales were driven by a growing interest in branded and technologically advanced products. Design features are becoming increasingly important. Premium lines are selling well, as shown by the boom in espresso makers.

Global brands dominate

Domestic electrical appliances is dominated by multinationals, with Whirlpool, Gorenje, Electrolux, Bosch, Philips and SEB among the key players. Of local manufacturers, only Czech player Mora (now part of Gorenje) and Slovak player Eta have a significant presence. Sales are driven by innovation and new product launches. While TV and media advertising helps to increase brand awareness, the most effective promotion is through in-store displays, coupons and special offers.

Rapid growth of specialist multiples

Since 2001, Slovakia saw a rapid growth of specialist multiples and the opening of modern superstores dedicated to domestic electrical appliances and electronics. Domestic electrical appliances is now dominated by specialist multiples and grocery multiples, whose vast product selections and price competition are impacting on consumer purchasing habits. The other channels are losing share, in particular specialist independents, with these being priced out of the competition. Internet sales are still low but growing, driven by the growing number of dedicated online retailers.

Strong prospects for future growth

Domestic electrical appliances should benefit from projected economic growth during the forecast period and Slovakia’s membership of the EU. Key socio-demographic trends will continue to underpin consumer demand for all kinds of appliances, such as the growing number of single-person households and an increasing share of women in full-time employment. Sales of built-in appliances should benefit from the growth among upper income groups, as well as the growing use of consumer credit. While sales will continue to be driven by innovation and new product launches, prices are likely to continue to fall as a result of widespread price competition and discounting.
