Executive summary
Negative growth during the economic downturn
Growth in domestic electric appliances turned negative in 2008, as demand was limited by the spike in consumer prices. Soaring oil prices sent prices up at the fastest pace since the 1997 financial crisis, and the majority of consumers responded by squeezing their spending. While consumers managed to cope with the increased prices of food, they tightened their purse strings in terms of durable goods, eating out and travel. Sales volumes of refrigeration appliances, air conditioners and automatic washing machines sank into negative growth, but overall sales growth in other categories also became sluggish.
Energy-efficient appliances are the area of focus
In 2008, the focus of new products was directed towards energy-efficiency. Newly released fridges reduced electricity consumption with an inverter compressor. New air conditioners were pitched as showing a drastic reduction in electricity costs. New products released in 2007 were characterised by digital-based functions. Washing machines were capable of optimising washing by identifying the nature of the water, density of detergent and water temperature. Digital inverters in air conditioners enabled users to customise the indoor temperature to their needs with the minimum energy cost. However, stylish designs were also prominent amongst new products. Employing artists or fashion designers for new designs on refrigerators, washing machines or air conditioners is common practice amongst Korean manufacturers.
Foreign brands actively expand their retail presence
As Korean brands dominate large kitchen appliances, and the overall volume share of most foreign brands remains meagre, at single-digits, many foreign brands are modifying their strategies in South Korea. Their strategies include the supply of entry-level and mid-range washing machines and vacuum cleaners, instead of premium products, and the exploration of non-department store distribution channels. Miele, Siemens, Electrolux and Haier are scrambling to overcome their critical weakness in terms of lack of distribution channels and after-sales capabilities. They have successfully secured shelves in electrical goods retailers multiples and hypermarkets, which have emerged as some of the most favoured retail outlets in South Korea, and online outlets. With an expanded retail presence, these foreign brands strive to attract consumer attention by capitalising on the advanced functions and reasonable prices of their products.
The number of men purchasing appliances is growing
As the involvement of men in housekeeping increases, due to the increasing number of working couples, a new segment of consumers, called “super daddy”, has been created. In fact, the number of men purchasing dishwashers, food waste processors, steam vacuum cleaners and irons has increased by double-digits, according to a home shopping channel. The proportion of male consumers purchasing an electric appliance is still not significant. However, some manufacturers have already begun to target men as a potential consumer group for their products. It is quite possible that men, along with single consumers, will be actively explored as a potential target group for domestic electrical appliances.
Economic downturn makes the future of premium manufacturers uncertain
Korean manufacturers aimed to develop premium products over the review period. They advanced the functions of domestic electrical appliances by applying digital technology. However, there is a limit to how far products can be evolved based on digital technology. In addition, soaring prices of raw materials undermined the profitability of even premium products. However, a growing number of consumers will become more conscious about price in the economic downturn when purchasing an appliance, and may choose products with basic functions. An imminent rise in electricity bills will lead consumers to purchase energy-efficient electrical appliances.
