Executive summary
Main findings
The Spanish market for domestic electrical appliances achieved very healthy growth in 2005, with value sales outperforming volume sales as a general rule.
In unit terms, the personal care sector boasted the greatest number of unit sales, whilst refrigeration was the largest sector in value terms. All of its appliances demonstrated strong growth. In refrigeration, the best performer was the “side by side” or American-style fridge freezer which demonstrated impressive growth in 2004 and 2005 albeit from a low base level.
Washer dryers was the most dynamic type of large domestic appliance in 2005 and dishwashers also demonstrated a strong performance. Dishwashers have the lowest rate of penetration among large kitchen appliances in Spain. The strong increase in the number of working parents and single women, coupled with a rapid rise in income per household and favourable credit facilities, contributed to dishwashers' continued growth among Spanish consumers.
Main factors provoking the good performance of the domestic appliance market in 2005 were the increase in one person and couple households, high immigration, the booming construction industry, as well as the solid performance of the economy, which maintained healthier GDP growth than its European neighbours. Low interest rates allowed consumer credit (mortgages and personal loans) to continue expanding, while major urban centres in Spain continued to suffer from an acute shortage of new homes.
Sales of domestic electrical appliances have been helped by the fact that consumers want access to appliances, even if these carry higher average prices, and are prepared to pay more for improved quality and performance. This explains the improvement in the performance of value over volume for companies that managed to address these demands.
Value sales continue to lead over volume growth
Value growth, as in 2003 and 2004, continued to lead, ahead of volume growth. This is not only a reflection of the consumer’s continued leaning towards more sophisticated technology, so-called “value-added” goods - sophisticated but at a reasonable price, but also indicative of another trend - the increasing competitiveness of the market.
For example only three years ago just three manufacturers offered refrigeration equipped with anti-bacterial treatments, now this “innovation” is standard. This situation is discernible across the sectors. The launch of Whirlpool’s innovative 8kg load washing machine Dreamspace has since been replicated by LG’s Tromm series and New Pol, amongst others, and larger capacity washing machines are now commonplace.
Competitive environment
Although large multinational manufacturers play a key part in the Spanish domestic appliance market, domestic players also have a stronghold, claiming leadership in many sectors. The Spanish manufacturer Teka was the leader in 2005 in ovens, cooker hoods and hobs, whilst the other Spanish giant Fagor Electrodomésticos claimed leadership in refrigeration appliances and freestanding cookers, slightly ahead of its German rival Bosch-Siemens Hausgeräte (BSH).
Many Spanish manufacturers are embracing internationalisation strategies in order to consolidate their position in the domestic and international markets. This year Fagor, for example, acquired the French appliance maker Elco Brandt thereby doubling its previous size and making it Europe’s fifth-largest white goods manufacturer with a turnover of about €2 billion.
Companies such as Swedish giant Electrolux and the German powerhouse Bosch-Siemens Hausgeräte (BSH) are the leading players in home laundry appliances and refrigeration appliances. In this market Whirlpool and Miele also have a significant share, but are still niche players. In dishwashers BSH is leading the pack, and is also in the top three in large cooking appliances.
