Executive summary

2007 sees dark clouds looming over the economy

One of the main driving forces behind the good performance of the Spanish economy over the review period was the booming construction industry. In 2007, increased interest rates and oversupply contributed to the deceleration of new housing construction and therefore the general economic slowdown.

Dark and looming clouds in the economy and the growing cost of mortgages have begun to impact Spanish disposable income and individuals are postponing the purchase of new electrical appliances. In terms of volume sales, the domestic electrical appliances market increased by a mere 2% and large kitchen appliances saw a marginal decline in 2007.

Construction damaging sales of large kitchen appliances

Large cooking appliances sales are being impacted by the deceleration of the property and construction sectors, which had previously been the engine for growth. The tightening of controls regarding loan and mortgage applications (caused by the subprime crisis), spiralling property prices alongside uncertainty about the future value of property, caused a sudden deceleration of the property market, with knock-on effects for the domestic electrical appliances market.

Built-in appliances: design and integrated decoration

Homes are increasingly becoming status symbols in Spain and thus design and home decoration are gaining importance among Spaniards. In line with this trend, kitchens are regarded as an integral space in which large kitchen appliances have to be integrated with the rest of the kitchen furniture and decoration. The built-in large kitchen appliances (LKAs) segment, which is still small compared to countries such as Germany, is expected to gain share in the forecast period. However, the Spanish construction slowdown could postpone the widely expected boom in the sales of built-in appliances.

Image counts

The personal care segment saw the fastest growth among small electric appliances, reflecting the increasing preoccupation with aesthetics among Spaniards. The increasing interest in the category among major manufacturers such as Philips Electrónica de Consumo SA has been a key factor to explain this growth. At the same time, heating appliances saw the worst performance, partly due to the recent mild winters and to the massive introduction of air conditioning systems that include heating options.
