Strong economy encourages consumer spending
The Czech Republic posted record economic growth in 2006, average personal income continued to rise and the country’s unemployment rate remained low. After 13 years the population is growing again, and people believe that the economy and their financial future is stable. Consumers are prepared to spend more in 2007 than in 2006.
Demand for built-in appliances grows
Built-in appliances are increasingly common and thanks to falling prices their share of sales has increased in recent years. The variety of built-in appliances is becoming as large as that of freestanding appliances, and these two categories are forecast to achieve a balanced share of sales in the large kitchen, refrigeration and laundry appliances environments.
Energy saving and eco-friendly appliances see increased demand
Consumers in Czech Republic increasingly demand that their appliances are not only effective, but are also environmentally friendly and energy saving. Labels stating energy consumption levels have become one of the first things consumers look for when shopping for such products, and play a key role in influencing purchasing decisions.
Popularity of consumer credit to decrease
Interest among Czech consumers in credit peaked as a result of the positive economic situation. However, traditional payment for domestic electrical appliances is likely to see a comeback, and consumer credit will remain a sales motivation only for large, higher priced appliances for consumers in the low income segment.
Despite multinationals’ dominance, Eta remains brand leader
Although Electrolux AB held the leading position in the Check Republic’s domestic electrical appliances market, Eta remains the most popular brand. Eta has successfully increased brand awareness, introducing over 150 new products and increasing the number of its own brand stores in recent years. Nonetheless, consumers name multinational brands as their primary choice. There are too few Czech manufacturers, and they are too small to compete with global brands. Czech manufacturers lack presence in the higher price segment, and given that today’s customers are often willing to spend more on the latest designs and innovations for the sake of style and convenience, multinationals win. Local companies are likely to eventually be acquired by a multinational player. Multinational brands have invested large amounts in new product development and promotion and successfully retained majority of sales.
