Executive summary

Macroeconomic growth propels demand for domestic electrical appliances

In 2007, weakening inflation, appreciation of the local currency, unabated increase in remittances from Overseas Filipino Workers, rise in disposable income and a drop in unemployment and interest rates have resulted in an upsurge in private consumption and a boom in the property and housing sector, which in turn drove the growth for domestic electrical appliances.

Demand from rural households growing

With the significant improvement in rural electrification, along with increases in purchasing power and disposable income and remittances from relatives working abroad, the demand from rural households for domestic electrical appliances is on the rise. As more manufacturers take advantage of the opportunities in the rural areas, they are more likely to develop products that can better suit rural conditions and to offer more affordable models equipped with basic functions.

Rising demand for health-conscious appliances

With health concerns dramatically escalating, industry players are starting to introduce appliances which enable consumers to better care for their health and wellbeing. Samsung took the lead in this area, by introducing its Silver Nano Technology which helps remove bacteria, mould and germs in its refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners.

Energy labelling and certification paves the way for the development of better products

With looming energy problems, the Philippine government is implementing strategies to empower consumers to be more efficient in the utilisation of energy. Its Lighting and Appliance Testing Laboratory certifies models of air conditioners and refrigerators which meet a certain level of energy efficiency and provides energy labels to help consumers make better and more informed decisions on what units and brands to purchase. By requiring manufacturers to declare the performance and energy consumption of their product, the production of better quality products is encouraged and the dumping of inefficient products prevented.

Price wars intensify

Manufacturers face the problem of continued price depressions as a result of intense competition to capture a bigger share of the market. In 2007, unit prices of products in all categories, except for microwave ovens and refrigeration appliances, fell. This has greatly benefited the consumers, particularly the highly price-sensitive mass market.
