Executive summary

Intense Competition Results in Falling Average Prices

Volume increases generally outpaced value rises in almost all categories, indicating a general trend towards falling prices. Intense competition drove major players to engage in price wars that only served to enhance affordability and accessibility of domestic electrical appliances to the broader mass market. Heavy discounts, attractive instalment terms and zero-interest rate credit card purchases all contributed to underscore the healthy volume growth, at the expense of slower value sales.

Rural Areas Provide Much-Needed Boost

Improving incomes in rural areas as well as more reliable power supply encouraged rural households to own more domestic electrical appliances, mitigating the slow growth in highly saturated urban areas. Refrigerators and washing machines benefited mostly from changing habits of stocking up on food items in place of daily trips to fresh food markets and mechanical washing away from hand washing. However, in both urban and rural Philippines, the availability of affordable domestic help will continue to stifle demand slightly for cleaning appliances, as well as some small electrical appliances in the kitchen.

Rebound in Housing Underpins Resilient Growth

Housing figures are expected to get even stronger as the steady inflow of dollar remittances from overseas-based Filipino workers (OFWs) makes its way into the housing and property sectors, in turn fuelling demand for household appliances.

Japanese Mass Brands Continue to Dominate

Having established themselves in the Philippines for some time, Japanese mass brands have long dominated domestic appliances in the Philippines. Panasonic, Sharp, Sanyo, Hitachi, Hanabishi and Asahi are all household names. US and European brands, such as Whirlpool, American Home, Electrolux and Elba, are positioned in the premium segment. Philips and Imarflex are well-known in small appliances. Local brands are represented by Concepcion Industries's Condura, Maclin's Promac and Northern Islands's 3D.

Aggressive Push by Korean Brands

Samsung and LG have been actively innovating. They embarked on aggressive promotions to chip market share away from the leading brands. By introducing state-of-the-art models through aggressive product advertising, Korean brands are starting to be noticed by prospective consumers in the Philippines.
