Executive summary

Slackening Economy Causes Slowdown in Growth

A continued rise in oil and food prices manifested in an inflation rate during 2008, which was considered the highest in 10 years. This dampened consumer spending which in turn affected the sales of domestic electrical appliances. The rise in the average unit price of appliances occurred because manufacturers faced higher manufacturing costs and this contributed to the slowdown. The growth in the residential property segment helped bring about growth but at a modest and at a lower rate than in 2007.

Demand for Residential Properties from Overseas Filipino Workers

Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) get bigger in number each year and put a significant amount of their remittances in housing investments. In the last two years, OFWs accounted for as much as 30% of local real estate companies sales. Along with this significant investment in real estate properties is the growing popularity of mid and premium brands of domestic electrical appliances among consumers who are OFW and demand highly innovative, stylish, health-promoting and energy-efficient products.

Households Demand Energy-efficient Appliances

With the rising cost of energy, consumers are shifting towards more energy-efficient appliances. Energy savings became much of a concern to consumers as they look for products with energy labels indicating a higher energy efficiency ratio (EER). Products which are highly popular among consumers include refrigerators using inverter technology, air conditioners with a good sleep mode and washing machines utilising an innovative steam technology.

Production Costs Result in Upward Average Unit Price

With the global increase in basic production inputs oil and steel, manufacturers were forced to increase prices during the review period. The price increase was limited by intense competition among existing players. Part of this competition was the introduction by the manufacturers of new and more desirable features together with value-added services to capture a significant share of the DEA market.

Mid-priced Brands Continue to Capture Main Bulk of the Market

Mid-priced brands such as Sharp, Panasonic, Samsung, Imarflex and Philips maintained their strong foothold in the domestic electrical appliances market in the country, having established themselves as affordable yet quality brands with reliable after-sales service. The growing middle class and their awareness that in the long-run it is more cost effective to buy mid-priced goods in lieu of cheap Chinese brands has likewise boosted the sales of the former.
