Executive summary
Fast Growth Rates in 2007
Financial cards is a fast growing market that has proven itself in the past few years and will continue to perform well in the forecast period. Financial card usage is increasing due to its comfort and convenience and due to the growing number of businesses accepting financial cards. In addition, the growing consumer trend of on-line purchasing supports financial card growth, making cash purchasing unnecessary and forcing the credit card companies to come up with safer financial products.
An Improving Economy Boosts Growth
The Israeli economy emerged from its recession stage, showing positive growing for the fourth year in succession in 2006. Growth was aided by positive macro-economic trends, encouraging monetary and fiscal disciplines and a relative quiet security situation after the second war in Lebanon in the summer of 2006. Economic growth is expected to continue in the foreseeable future.
New Credit Solutions Derived from the "Overdraft Law"
The "overdraft law" which limits the credit given consumers by the banks, was fully implemented during 2007. It encourages consumers to handle their accounts more responsibly. The credit card companies offer an additional account not connected to those offered by the banks, in addition to side loans, in order to help consumers to balance their finances. These additional accounts come with revolving credit cards and together comprise the most interesting development in financial cards in 2007.
Pre-paid Cards Sees Rapid Growth in 2007
Pre-paid cards was led by sales of gift cards. New gift cards were launched in 2007 as contracts were signed aligning businesses, stores and credit card companies in providing new gift card opportunities. The expanding gift card offerings led to its rapid growth, in fact the highest rate of increase in financial cards overall. The prospects for future expansion and growth appear good given the abundant potential provided by the Israeli market.
Smart Cards Make their First Appearance
Leumi-Card Ltd launched its strategic plan to upgrade all of its cards to microprocessor chip cards or smart cards. At the end of 2007, half of its clientele were holding smart cards. The company will encourage the financial card industry to support smart card technology, with the hope that it will eventually reduce losses due to fraud by approximately 80%.
