Executive summary

Healthy economy spurs financial card growth

Positive economic indicators and increased consumer credit helped create growth in every type of financial card in 2006. Lower interest rates and increased employment continue to compel Americans to save less and have helped push consumer debt to a record high, which has encouraged card use. Credit card, debit card and electronic payment use now eclipses paper checks in the US according to the Federal Reserve, and card issuers continue to respond to this preference by offering cards with more customised rewards incentives and newer technologies to lure new customers.

Pre-paid cards show potential

Pre-paid cards were the fastest growing area of financial cards in 2006. Much of this came from gift cards, which have all but replaced the gift certificates of the past and are used by retailers to encourage brand loyalty and repeat visits to the store. But pre-paid cards are replacing traditional payment forms in many other areas as well, from government social security benefits to closed loop transit and parking cards to pre-paid debit cards targeting the un-banked consumer. More and more consumers are choosing the convenience of stored value cards to help with tasks in their everyday lives.

Debit cards become payment of choice for consumers

Consumers have adopted debit cards as their preferred payment type with increasing frequency over the last five years. In 2005, the number of debit card transactions surpassed the number of personal credit card transactions for the first time. Debit card growth has been helped by the more widespread merchant acceptance of PIN and signature debit, as well as an increase in online purchasing. Debit cards have also largely replaced traditional ATM cards, and contributed towards a steady increase in ATM transactions.

Micropayments become focus

Credit card issuers and operators have recently turned their attention towards capturing micropayments, or payments under US$5. Visa, MasterCard and American Express have all invested in contactless card technology in the last few years, and these systems have rolled out especially in fast food, petrol/gas station and convenience store outlets where consumers are more inclined to make small purchases and be more concerned with minimising their time in the store. By waving contactless cards in front of a scanner, seconds are shaved off the transaction time, and rewards programmes featuring points or credits towards petrol/gas purchases are also often in place to encourage further use of these cards. Future potential adoption of electronic payments in areas like vending machines and mobile phones mean that micropayments will continue to offer a large opportunity for card issuers.
