Executive summary

Gardens being seen as an extra room

The present housing obsession in Ireland as well as a media focus on gardening stimulated sales of gardening during the review period. The idea of the garden as a "room outside" is taking hold in Ireland, widening consumers' usage of their gardens and increasing demand for items such as gazebos and patio heaters.

Retailers diversifying to offset effects of seasonality

Gardening sales are traditionally concentrated in two main parts of the year, spring and autumn. The bad weather that often occurs during these times in Ireland can be disastrous for sales. Horticultural retailers are therefore diversifying heavily in order to be less vulnerable to these fluctuations.

Novice gardeners want instant gardens

The number of householders is increasing but the proportion of experienced gardeners is declining. "Instant" gardening products are on the rise, from pre-planted hanging baskets to labour-saving electric tools. Low maintenance hard landscaping is also becoming increasingly popular.

Independent retailers still dominate

Independent retailers still lead gardening retail in Ireland, despite other retailers such as DIY multiples, Argos and supermarkets entering. There are signs of some garden centre chains beginning but nothing approaching the scale of chains such as Wyvale in the UK. Many long established independents have the advantage of occupying prime retail land, as towns expand into the countryside. However, this also resulted on strong pressure on retailers to sell up to other businesses, such as supermarkets, which are eager to acquire new sites.
